J Robinson, the Univ. of Minnesota head wrestling coach, fresh off his team's repeat performance as champions at the NCAA Div. I Tournament, appeared Wednesday at a press conference at the Roy Wilkins Auditorium in downtown Saint Paul, Minnesota. This time, the topic was not his national champion Gophers team. In wrestling circles, Robinson is a master at promotions, and he wanted to make sure the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul and the entire state was aware that the World Team Trials were coming to the Roy Wilkins Auditorium in Saint Paul, Minn., June 21-23. "We have a great group of former Minnesota athletes that will compete in the World Trials this summer, and those guys deserve your support," Robinson said. Local television stations, radio, and newspapers attended the press conference, to listen to Robinson and other wrestling figures talk about the tournament this summer. Several of Minnesota's Senior-level athletes also spoke including two-time NCAA national champion Tim Hartung, 2001 World Freestyle Silver Medalist Brandon Eggum, and 2001 World Greco-World Silver Medalist and 1996 Olympic Silver Medalist Brandon Paulson. All competed at the Univ. of Minnesota, and are now training in the region for the next Olympic Games. The former Gophers are looking for a lot of local support at this year's all-important World Team Trials. Each wrestler will vie for the No. 1 ranking on USA Wrestling's national team with the right to represent the United States at the 2002 World Championships. This year's World Championships are set for Greece (women), Iran (men's freestye) and Russia (men's Greco-Roman). This is only the second time in USA Wrestling history that the World Team Trials for men's freestyle, women's freestyle and men's Greco-Roman will be held together at one site. USA Wrestling expects that this competition will continue to grow into one of the most popular wrestling events in the nation. Saint Paul's Mayor Randy Kelly also spoke to the media covering the announcement of the Trials. "Minnesota and the Midwest is a hot-bed for wrestling. We are looking forward to having this important event come to Minnesota this summer," he said. "Saint Paul is well known as a seasoned veteran tournament city, with extensive experience in event management, fan services, and event marketing," said Thomas Getzke, CMP, the President/CEO of the Saint Paul Convention and Visitors Bureau. "Our goal as host city is to work in partnership with USA Wrestling to establish a new level of excellence for this event." The Roy Wilkins Auditorium in the heart of downtown St. Paul offers wrestling fans tremendous sight lines for the viewing of the battles on the mat. Additionally, hotels and restaurants are located within walking distance of the arena. The capacity for the tournament is around 6,000 and ticket sales for the World Team Trials are well ahead of last year's pace in Cincinnati, Ohio "We want to see a great crowd of at this summer's Trials," stated Brandon Eggum. "The Minnesota wrestling community knows the sport of wrestling and once they see the Trials they'll be hooked on international wrestling." Pete Isais, National Events Manager for USA Wrestling is enthusiastic about the potential for the 2002 World Trials. "There is no doubt that the state of Minnesota is excited and organizing quickly so that there will be a large turnout for this summer's World Team Trials," said Isais.
