SIOUX CITY, IA, March 19, 2002 - Some of the world's best freestyle wrestlers will go head-to-head as a formidable United States team takes on the National Team of South Korea in the annual Two Worlds - One Mat dual wrestling meet, on Tuesday, April 9. This clash will take place in the Newman Flanagan Center on the campus of Briar Cliff University in Sioux City, IA, beginning at 7:00 p.m. It will mark just the second time a wrestling competition of this magnitude has been held in northwest Iowa. Last year, the US dropped a close contest to the Turkish national team, 17-15, with the dual coming down to the final, overtime match. Many of the athletes and coaches on both squads have extensive experience on the national and international freestyle scene. The US contingent will be led by Tom Brands, assistant coach at the University of Iowa and Olympic andWorld Champion. "South Korea has some of the top individual wrestlers in the world, including two medalists from this year's World Championships in Bulgaria," said Brands. "The Koreans will be in excellent shape coming out of the World Cup." Brands will lead the US team against the same South Korean national team that will compete at the 2002 World Cup of Freestyle Wrestling, April 5-6, in Spokane, WA. While the entire US roster has not yet been finalized, three wrestlers scheduled to compete have extensive international experience. Heading the list for Team USA is 2002 Dave Schultz Memorial Invitational champion and World Team member Chad Lamer at 211.2 pounds. He is the 2001 US National runner-up, two-time Manitoba Open Champion and was champion of the University Worlds in 2000. Lamer, who attended Tri-Valley High School in South Dakota, was a three-time NCAA Division II National Champion at South Dakota State and currently trains in Iowa City, IA. At heavyweight will be 1995 US Nationals Champion Tolly Thompson, who will wrestle for the USA at 264 pounds. He finished second at the 2001 Nationals and was a world team member in 1997. Thompson, a native of Janesville, IA, was a three-time NCAA All-American for Nebraska and is currently the strength and conditioning coach at his alma mater. Representing the US at 145.2 pounds will be South Sioux City, NE native and local favorite Tony DeAnda. He placed second at the 2002 Dave Schultz and third in the same tournament in 1997. He also qualified for the 1999 World Championships in Ankara, Turkey. DeAnda placed seventh at the 2001 US Nationals. He was an NCAA Division II All-American at Augustana (SD) College before transferring to Nebraska where he was a two-time NCAA Division I National Tournament qualifier. At 121 pounds will be Jody Strittmatter. Strittmatter placed second at this year's Dave Schultz to 2001 World Champion Herman Kantoev of Bulgaria. He was a two-time All-American for the University of Iowa, placing second last year and third in 2000. Strittmatter was also a two-time NCAA Division II national champion at Pitt-Johnstown before transferring to Iowa. A kids and coaches clinic will be held prior to the dual, beginning at 5:30 p.m. Tickets for the event are $10 and will only be available at the door. All seats are general admission
