To many, the NCAA Div. I quarterfinals is the most exciting and intriguing of all rounds. This is when the furr really flies. The athletes with high seeds are no longer facing athletes with no seed or low seeds. For the athletes who scored upsets to reach this round, the goal is to continue chasing their dream. The team race also starts coming into sharp focus. Oklahoma and Minnesota, both with 10 athletes still in the tournament, hope to use this round to create some space from the field. Talented teams such as Iowa, Michigan, Iowa State, Oklahoma State and others are seeking to close the gap and put themselves in position to move to the top. 125 pounds No. 1 Stephen Abas (Fresno State) dec. No. 8 Shawn Williams (Oregon), 8-4 No. 4 Chris Fleeger (Purdue) dec. No. 5 Ben Vombaur (Boise State), 6-4 No. 3 Skyler Holman (Oklahoma State) dec. No. 11 Travis Lee (Cornell), , 12-9 No. 7 Luke Eustice (Iowa) dec. unseeded Tom Noto (Hofstra), 9-6 Summary: Abas started slowly with no takedowns in the first period. In the second period, Abas escaped and scored a takedown for a 3-0 lead and never looked back. With another third period takedown and a ton of riding time, Abas claimed the 8-4 win. Fleeger scored first period takedown and backpoints for a 4-0 lead, and controlled the match. Vombauer came back to make the match close, but Fleeger's riding time advantage gave him a 6-4 edge. Holman and Lee had a close battle early on, but Holman scored a peterson roll for a reversal and backpoints to open a 9-2 lead. Lee's comeback was impressive, but Holman had a riding time advantage and closed out the match at 12-9. The session's most active and competitive bout saw Eustice take the early lead, and Noto battle back for a 5-5 tie in the third period. Eustice broke the tie with a third-period takedown for a 7-5 score, and the bout ended at 9-6 after Noto had to open it up to try to score a late takedown. 133 pounds No. 1 Ryan Lewis (Minnesota) dec. No. 9 Zach Roberson (Iowa State), 9-5 No. 4 Kevin Black (Wisconsin) dec. No. 5 David Douglas (Arizona State), 10-5 No. 3 Witt Durden (Oklahoma) dec. No. 6 Cliff Moore (Iowa), 11-7 No. 2 Johnny Thompson (Oklahoma State) fall No. 7 Jeff Ratliff (Ohio State), 2:04 Roberson jumped to a 5-2 lead in the first period, but Lewis rallied to tie it up at 5-5 at the end of the period. After riding Roberson for a period, Lewis scored a third period escape and a clutch takedown for an 8-5 margin. Riding time closed it at 9-5. Black opened the match up early by hitting a headlock finish and scoring key backpoints in the first period. Douglas battled back to make it interesting, but Black held the edge in key positions to deny Douglas the chance to make up the difference. Durden scored the first takedown, and led the entire match. Never quitting, Moore closed the score to 7-6 after a clutch third period, but a Durden escape and takedown late in the match ended the comeback. Durden also earned riding time for the final advantage. Thompson wasted no time in the first period, scoring the first takedown to a pinning situation and planting Ratliff early on. 141 pounds No. 1 Mark Conley (Navy) dec. No. 8 Chad Erikson (Minnesota), 6-0 No. 5 Aaron Holker (Iowa State) maj. dec. No. 4 Dylan Long (Northern Iowa), 15-2 Unseeded Nate Parker (Oklahoma) dec. No. 6 Cedric Haymon (Cal Poly), 6-4 No. 2 Eric Larkin (Arizona State) maj. dec. unseeded J.P. Reese (Missouri), 13-2 Conley scored the first takedown and wrestled solidly the rest of the match, never allowing Erikson to get anything going. Scoring in every period, and knotching riding time, Conley shut down Erikson Long scored the first takedown, but then it was all Holker. A first-period reversal to three backpoints changed the lead to 5-2 Holker. In every position the rest of the match, Holker prevailed, scoring almost at will, and knotched the last 14 points of the bout. The unseeded dream continued for Parker, who scored the first takedown on a hip toss and used the early advantage the rest of the way. Parker led 4-2 in the third with much riding time, but Haymon scored a takedown to tie it at 4-4. Haymon cut Parker loose for an escape and went for a late takedown, but Parker held his defense, claimed the riding time and won 6-4. Larkin snuffed Parker's dream week right from the start, with a takedown and two three-point turns in the first period for a commanding 8-0 lead in the first period. The rest of the match was all Larkin, as Reese was not able to get his funky style activated. 149 pounds No. 8 Jake Percival (Ohio) maj. dec. No. 1 Mike Zadick (Iowa), 18-4 No. 4 Jared Frayer (Oklahoma) dec. No. 5 Jesse Jantzen (Harvard), 7-2 No. 3 JaMarr Billman (Lock Haven) dec. No. 6 Mike Kulczycki (Michigan), 5-3 No. 2 Jared Lawrence (Minnesota) dec. No. 7 Billy Maldonado (Iowa State), 10-2 Percival showed no fear, even after Zadick scored the first points. An escape and takedown gave Percival a 3-2 lead and another takedown made it 5-3. The second period broke it open for Percival, when he scored a takedown to three-backpoints for a 10-3 lead. Percival got another tilt for two points then opened up the offense for a dominant thrashing of the top seed. Frayer scored a first period takedown directly to a two-point nearfall, and never looked back. Jantzen could never get into his game after that, and Frayer controlled the action. Billman scored the first takedown and held the edge in a very close contest. A second period Billman takedown provided a 4-2 lead. Kulczycki could not score a takedown, the key to the bout. Lawrence had the first period takedown, and scored a second period takedown to take control of the action. From that point on, Maldonado tried to play catch-up, opening himself up to more Lawrence attacks. 157 pounds No. 1 Bryan Snyder (Nebraska) fall No. 9 Gray Maynard (Michigan State), 5:07 No. 4 Shane Roller (Oklahoma State) fall No. 5 Scott Owen (Northern Illinois), 3:48 No. 3 Luke Becker (Minnesota) maj. dec. No. 6 Ryan Bertin (Michigan), 12-4 No. 2 Yoshi Nakamura (Pennsylvania) dec. No. 10 Griff Powell (Illinois), 5-3 Snyder scored two first period takedowns for a 4-2 lead after one. He held the edge until the third period, when Snyder was able to turn Maynard and secure a very tight hold for the fall. Roller scored the first period takedown to lead 2-0 after the first stanza. After a Roller escape, the talented Cowboy scored a takedown to immediate back esposure, sunk in the legs and pressed him for the fall. Becker had two first period takedowns for a 4-1 lead after the first period. From that point on Bertin could not get anything going, as Becker wrestled almost flawlessly. A late takedown in the third period, along with riding time gave him the major decision. Nakamura scored takedowns in the first and second period, and denied Powell any scoring opportunities except escapes. In the third period, leading 5-3, Nakamura shut down the action and closed out the match with strong defense. 165 pounds No. 1 Joe Heskett (Iowa State) dec. No. 9 Robbie Waller (Oklahoma), 10-2 unseeded Mark Fee (Appalachian State) dec. No. 5 Josh Henson (Pennsylvania), 7-4 No. 3 Tyrone Lewis (Oklahoma State) dec. No. 7 Eugene Harris (Oregon), 3-1 Heskett scored every takedown of the match, with key takedowns in the first and second period to give himself a comfortable lead that Waller could not erase. Fee scored the first takedown, but was immediately reversed for a 2-2 tie. It was in the third period that Fee scored the deciding takedown for a 6-3 lead with just one minute to go. After a Henson escape, Fee closed it out with defense on his feet. Riding time for Fee made it 7-4. Lewis scored a first-period takedown, but a second period takedown by Vecchio tied the match at 3-3. After trading escapes, Lewis broke a 4-4 tie with an ankle pick takedown for a 6-4 lead, and after another Vecchio escape, nailed another takedown for an 8-5 win.
