The best youth wrestlers in the nation will be gathering to compete in the 2002 Kids Nationals Folkstyle Championships. It will be held at the Topeka Expocentre in Topeka, Kan., April 5-7. This marks the first of three events on the way to the Kids Triple Crown. The Kids Triple Crown recognizes athletes who win all three USA Wrestling national titles in one year - folkstyle, freestyle and Greco-Roman. A handsome award is given to those individuals who win all three titles. The competition is held at three age levels: Midget (9-10 years), Novice (11-12 years) and Schoolboy/girl (13-14 years). Ten wrestlers claimed the prestigious Kids Triple Crown last year. In the Midget division R.J. Pena of Oregon (75) and Jeff Olsen of Georgia (87) were winners. At the Novice level, Riley Adamson of New Mexico (75), Eric Starks of Washington (90) and Elijah Madison of Kansas (!40) all claimed the Triple Crown. The Schoolboy/girl Triple Crown winners were Jake Swensen of Utah (100), Daniel LeClere of Iowa (120), Angel Escobedo of Indiana (110), David Craig of Florida (130) and Joe Zlatnik of Kansas (160 ++). Adamson became the first three-time winner of the Triple Crown in USA Wrestling history. He claimed his first Triple Crown in 1999 as a Midget, then added another Midget-level Triple Crown in 2000. This year he looks to add another title at the Novice level expanding his streak in history. Session times are Midget, Novice, Schoolboy/girl preliminaries, Saturday, April 6 at 9:00 a.m. until finished. Sunday, April 7 wrestling will begin at 8:00 a.m. for all age groups, preliminaries through finals until finished. Finals are tentatively scheduled to begin at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday.
