USA Wrestling's spring season begins with regional championships

This year's USA Wrestling spring event season is gearing up to kick off at the end of March with the USA Wrestling Regional Championships.     There are eight regional tournaments held each year. These regionals include the: Northwest, Northern Plains, Rocky Mountain, Northeast, Central, Southeast, Southern Plains and Western.     The top three Junior placewinners in each weight class in every regional will qualify for their state teams at Junior Nationals in Fargo, N.D. in July.    Three of the regionals have men's Senior divisions and two have women's Senior divisoins. Other local events held alongside the regionals feature cadets and schoolboy/girl age divisions.    The season will kick off Saturday and Sunday, March 23-24 with the Tom Shaw Memorial Northwest Regional Championships at Battle Ground High School in Battle Ground, Wash. This event is for Juniors. Please contact Event Director Merle Crockett at (360) 992-8854 for more information on this event. A local tournament for cadets and schoolboys/girls will held alongside this event.    The Northern Plains Regional Championships will be held Wednesday, March 27 through Saturday, March 30 at the LaCrosse Civic Center in LaCrosse, Wis. This event will include competition at the Junior, Senior men and Senior women levels. The championships will qualify Senior men and women champions for the World Team Trials in June. The Rocky Mountain Regional Championships are set for Thursday through Saturday, March 28-30 at War Memorial Fieldhouse in Laramie, Wyo. This competition is scheduled to host Junior and Senior men. The champions for the senior mens division will qualify to compete at the World Team Trials in June. The Northeast Regional Championships are scheduled to take place at Tuttle North Gym in Brockport, N.Y. on Friday, April 5 through Sunday, April 7. This will include competition for Juniors, Senior men and women. Champions in the senior men's and women's division will qualify for the World Team Trials in June. The Central Regional Championships will be conducted at Jeffersonville High School in Jeffersonville, Ind. on Friday-Sunday April 5-7. This tournament is for Juniors only. The Southeast Regional Championship will be hosted at Archbishop Rummel High School in Metaririe, La. on Thursday, April 11 through Sunday, April 14. Competition is for the Junior division only. There will not be a Senior women's or a Senior men's division at the competition this year.     The Southern Plains Regional Championships will be held Friday and Saturday, April 19-20 at Union Intermediate School in Broken Arrow, Okla. This tournament is put on for Juniors only. The Western Regional Championships will be held in conjunction with the U.S. Nationals in Las Vegas, Nev. on Tuesday, April 23 through Friday, April 26. The age divisions include those for Juniors, Senior men and women. This event will be held alongside the U.S. Nationals.
