NCAA DIV. I WRESTLING PRESS CONFERENCE Pepsi Center, Albany, N.Y., March 20, 2:30 p.m. Jim Zalesky, Univ of Iowa "We are looking forward to the tournament. We have eight guys here, but six new guys. I thought these eight did well at the Big Tens. We are putting individual emphasis on this event. They each have to wrestle well and will wrestle above their seeds." Bobby Douglas, Iowa State Univ. "I'm in here with a group of the finest coaches. They are the best at what they do. They are making my life miserable and are making wrestling very interesting. We had a great year. We won 17 matches, and I don't know how we won 16 of them. We have two outstanding wrestlers - Cael Sanderson and Joe Heskett. Cael has three titles and Joe was been to the finals twice. Our other wrestlers will have to do well for the team to do well. We are hoping these guys will wrestle above their seeds, and then we'd make a good showing." John Smith, Oklahoma State Univ. "We are pleased with our season. We had some expectation and goals before the season. We feel good about what we have done. We went 20-3. We had to regroup after a disappointment at the National Duals. For us to succeed, we will need several upsets. Our team success will be based upon pulling off upsets. The team did have an outstanding year in dual meets and tournaments." J. Robinson, Univ. of Minnesota "We are coming off a very good Big Ten Tournament. It was important for us to do well. We had to make an adjustment with this team. When you win the national tournament, it changes your psyche a lot. This year we are looking to do things in the semifinals and place people into the finals. We didn't come to defend the title. We came here to win this one. We want to control the things we can control. If we control that, then we can reach our goals." Mark Johnson, Univ. of Illinois "We placed seven of our nine qualifiers from our fifth-place team. We have the champion back at heavyweight. Anybody could win that class. And we have an outstanding individual in Matt Lackey. We are a young team. We don't know where we will finish in that tournament." J Robinson, Univ. of Minnesota (concerning his goal to improve as a team after the National Duals) "I think we have gotten better since the National Duals. We got nine guys in the finals in the Big Ten and five champions. We think we have picked it up a little bit every time we wrestled. Getting ready for the Big Ten tournament helped us. We are doing what we intended to do. Jack Spates, Univ. of Oklahoma (about how winning the Big 12 has affected the team) "It was an emotional high. They were excited and we gave them one day to celebrate that, then we told them that it was yesterday's news. What I liked was the way we wrestled at the Big 12 meet. We were wrestling to win, shooting at the end of matches, going for things. That kind of wrestling resulted in us winning the Big 12. We will need to wrestle like that here. It was encouraging and provided a model for the way we need to wrestle this week." Bobby Douglas, Iowa State Univ. (about Cael Sanderson) "Cael Sanderson has brought something to wrestling that it needed - the press. The press is now coming to wrestling. We are aware that the press could be a distraction. We are trying to let Cael be Cael. What you see is what you get. He is excited about this tournament. He is approaching it like any other tournament. Wrestling has a great opportunity this week. We hope people will respect him and give him some space. This is great for our program and great for wrestling." Jack Spates, Univ. of Oklahoma (about Cael Sanderson) "There is so much exciting about Cael Sanderson. In my opinion, and in many otheres, he is the greatest collegiate wrestler of all time. But, he's a great kid, a great student, a great artist, a great ambassador for our sport. He is relentless. He sets a pace that is unbelievable. It's great for the sport. We are very proud of him. And we are glad that he is graduating." Douglas (joking) "Not all of us are." Jim Zalesky, Univ. of Iowa (what his team needs to do to perform well) "We need the six new guys not to get caught up with being at the NCAA Tournament. They need to wrestle just like it is another tournament. I really think they are looking forward to this. They have to wrestle above their seeds. I think the Big Ten Tournament helped them to get ready for this." J Robinson, Univ. of Minnesota (about his team's approach) "If you come here trying to defend something, you become the hunted. We look at it differently. Once you have a national championship, it takes a year to get used to it. It is like the Midlands; you don't win just because you were the national champion. We talk about individual things. We don't dwell on it at all. You come in as the defending national champions. We just look at it like its another tournament that we have to win." Cael Sanderson, Iowa State, 197 pounds (responding to direct questions) (About his approach to the week) "I'm real excited. I approaching it like any tournament. I'm approaching it like I want to just do my best. I know that I need to keep my focus. I have to care about the little things that win matches and focus on that." (about whether he likes all of this attention, or if he'd like to settle it back in the wrestling room) "I like wrestling in front of people. It is good for the sport to get this kind of attention. It is great for Iowa State. I can't complain about that." (about his friends and supporters in Utah) "It has been tremendous. My biggest fans are from high school, the guys I grew up with. They are the people I came up with and have always been with me." (about his wrestling style at his new weight class) "Everything is exactly the same. I'm still trying to score points. That's my focus on the match." (What is on his mind today) "I'm just trying to get ready for my match tomorrow morning." (About what opponents he expects might give him a challenge) "There are a lot of tough guys. I have to prepare for all of them. I have to be ready for each match, and wrestle my style each time." (about whether it's the last nationals he has to wrestle, or its the last tournament he gets to wrestle) "Gets. I love wrestling. I love competing. It's going to be hard to come back to this and not be as involved as much." (about skipping the delayed World Championships to concentrate on college wrestling). "I knew going into the trials and the freestyle season that my major focus was on my senior year in college. When I made the US team, I was going to wrestle and I was excited about it. However, when they started changing the dates, it just couldn't be done." (about his international weight class) "I'm going down to 185 I think. It's a tragedy. They keep cutting weights. I really hurts the sport." (About any regrets) "My goal is to wrestle my best, so I don't have to think about this tournament in the future. This takes a lot of focus. You have to take it one match at a time. That is what I have done, and that is what I will do for the rest of my career." (about how well he slept the night before the finals the last three years) "I slept pretty well the night before. It was the nights before that, when you still have the quarters and semis ahead of you. It's all about fun, but once you are in the finals, it's an awesome experience. This is exactly the same as the other years. I know I have to wrestle well every match. I've had to practice the last few years. Hopefully it will get easier this time." (about thinking about winning four NCAA titles) "It would be impossible not to think about it. You realize you have to wrestle well every match. It's really a four-year process. It's something you have to work on every single day."
