6:50 - Eldar Kurtanidze of Georgia scored a 4-1 win over Marek Garmulewicz of Poland for the 97 kg bronze medal. The gold medal at 97 kg went to Saguid Mourtasaliev of Russia in a dominant 6-0 win over Islam Baraimukov of Kazakhstan. 6:20 - In a strange match dominated by the referees, Brandon Slay battled Alexander Leipold of Germany in the gold medal match. Both athletes were hit for passivity in the first period, but no points were scored. They started the second period in the clinch. After the athletes jockied for a lock-up, the officials hit Slay with a caution and 2-point penalty for not locking up properly at the 3:00 mark. At 3:30 Slay was hit for another caution and one penalty, for a 3-0 Leipold lead. Leipold got a takedown at 5:09 for the final 4-0 decision. 6:05 - Correcting an error. Jang Jae Sung of Korea beat Mohammed Talaie of Iran by tech. fall, 12-2 for the bronze at 63 kg. The champion at 63 kg was Mourad Oumachanov of Russia, who beat Serafim Barzakov of Bulgaria, 3-2. The bronze at 76 kg went to Moon Eiu Jae of Korea, who pinned Adem Bereket of Turkey in 2:42. Slay is now on the mat with Leipold. 5:55 - They have just given the medals at 54 kg. Henson is on the stand and is still visibly upset, crying as he gets his medal. The crowd has given him a nice ovation. They are now playing the national anthem of Azerbaijan. 5:20 - Sammie Henson just lost 4-3 to Abdullayev of Azerbaijan in the finals, and receives a silver. Henson fell behind quickly, as Abdullayev scored a takedown at 14 seconds then turned him for two on an ankle lace at 45 seconds, to trail 3-0. Henson received a point for a caution and a point at the 1:52 mark, then a double leg takedown at 2:50 to trail 2-1 at the break. Sammie tied it at the 3:22 on a double leg. Abdullayev took the lead with a takedown at 4:30 and held it until the end. Henson was devestated, and the U.S. coaches upset about the officiating and Abduallayev's repeated grasping of the singlet. More to come. 5:10 - Amiran Kartanov of Greece beat German Kontoev of Belarus for the bronze at 54 kg, 5-4. Kartanov blew a 2-0 lead to trail 4-2 late in the bout, but tied it with 15 seconds left, then got a fleeing the mat call in the final seconds for the win. Here comes Sammie 5:00 - The bronze medal match at 54 kg is now about to start. Sammie Henson is warming up and competes in the next match. Brandon Slay is the sixth match. Our first shot at freestyle gold has arrived. 10:55 - McIlravy closed the session with a hard fought but impressive win over Sanli of Turkey, the 1999 World bronze medalist. Sanli scored the only point of the first period on a caution and one point penalty against McIlravy for fleeing the mat at 2:38. In the second, a flurry of action was scored two points for each wrestler at the 3:50 mark, making it 3-2 for Sanli. From that point on, McIlravy opened up his takedown machine, scoring four consecutive points on takedowns at 4:10, 4:53 and 5:35 for the 6-3 win. 10:15 - On side by side mats, Kerry McCoy and Terry Brands scored easy wins. McCoy opened up the offense from his feet and on the mat for a 10-0 technical fall at 4:52 over Ashabaliyev of Azerbaijan. He opened with a three-point throw, then a one-point leg lace for a 4-0 lead in the opening 1:20. He added another takedown and a two-point leg lace for a 7-0 lead at break. His points in the second period were a caution and one for fleeing the mat against the Azerbaijani. He closed it out with an ankle lace for two points. Brands was dominant on his feet, taking down Polychronidis of Greece repeatedly in an 8-1 win. The only point Brands allowed was on a questionable escape early in the bout. Both athletes have now won their pools and will place in at least the top six of their weight. Both are now in the quarterfinals. 9:50 - Burton just scored a strong 10-0 technical fall over Martinetti of Switzerland. He led 3-0 in the first period on three leg attacks, then opened it up in the second with a pair of three point takedowns to the back and another straight single leg. Burton wins his pool and makes the quarterfinals. 9:20 AM on Saturday - The four wrestlers in the second group go in the morning session. On Mat A, Charles Burton has Martinetti of Switzerland as the second match. On Mat B, McCoy has Rajab Ashabaliyev of Azerbaijan in the third bout, and McIlravy has Sanli of Turkey in the eighth match. On Mat C, Brands is the fourth match against Polychronides of Greece.
