The National Wrestling Coaches Association has announced its 2002 Top 20 Scholar Teams, as well as its 2002 Academic All-Americans. These awards honor the top colleges and individual athletes for their academic achievements. The No. 1 Scholar Team in 2002 was the Milwaukee School of Engineering, which had a 3.532 GPA as a team. Ranked No. 2 was John Carroll University, with a 3.5306 GPA. In addition, a total of 98 wrestlers were honored for their academic and athletic achievements as Academic All-Americans. The nominee must have a 3.2 GPA (on a score of 4.0) for the previous academic year or as a cumulative GPA for his entire academic career. 2. The nominee must be enrolled at his current institution for at least one full year. Athletic Criteria: 1. The wrestler must have finished at least fourth in the conference qualifier or at least sixth in the regional qualifier. He must have competed in at least half of his institutions scheduled competitions and must have a won/loss record of at least .500. 2. The wrestler must have finished with a winning percentage of at least 67% and must have competed in at least 2/3 of his institutions total scheduled competition of NCAA sanctioned events. Additional Criteria: 1. The nominee must be of high moral character and in good standing at the institution making the nomination. 2. A nominee can be nominated in just one weight class. 3. Coaches submitting nominees must be active members, in good standing, in the NCAA Division III Wrestling Coaches Association and the National Wrestling Coaches Association.
