Stephen Abas (Fresno, Calif./Sunkist Kids), a No. 1 ranked wrestler on Freestyle Team USA, has been added to the U.S. lineup for the Northern Quest 2002 World Cup of Wrestling, set for April 6-7 at the Spokane Arena in Spokane, Wash. This will be the first World Cup competed under the new international wrestling weight classes. Abas will compete at the new 55 kg/121 lbs. weight class. He was a member of the 2001 U.S. World Team at 54 kg/119 lbs. Abas replaces Eric Akin (Lincoln, Neb./Sunkist Kids), who was originally listed as the U.S. participant on the team at 55 kg/121 lbs. Abas, as the No. 1 ranked athlete in the nation, had the first refusal on this event, and recently decided to participate. Abas is completing his senior year at Fresno State, where he will attempt to win his third NCAA Div. I national title at 125 pounds in Albany, N.Y., March 21-23. He participated in the 2001 World Cup in Baltimore, Md., where he placed fourth. Abas has won a number of international wrestling events including the Dave Schultz Memorial, the Clansman International in Canada and two titles at the Sunkist Kids International. Abas was the 1998 Junior World Champion, and was a bronze medalist at the 1994 Cadet World Championships. "I think Stephen has a bright future,"said USA Wrestling Freestyle National Coach Kevin Jackson. "He has very high potential to be a World Champion. Competing in the World Cup will give him added experience to become a great champion in the future." Jackson also announced that Daniel Cormier (Stillwater, Okla./Gator WC), who was listed as being on the U.S. team at 97 kg/211.5 lbs. will not participate in the World Cup. Cormier has a conflict, as he will be competing in a major international competion in Belarus the week before. Coach Jackson will name the final team member during the training camp in Spokane prior to the event. The United States won the Freestyle World Cup when it was held in Spokane in 1999 and has won four of the past five team titles. The other international wrestling powers expected are Russia, Korea, Germany and Canada. The Quad State Cup, a USA Wrestling event for athletes from Kids through Open, will be held alongside the World Cup. Young wrestlers can do both - wrestle and watch!
