Interesting match may materialize after the #4 and #5 seeds wrestle. The victor of the fourth and fifth seed match will then advance to see the number one seeded wrestler. At 125 pounds, Ty Malia of Iowa State will face Mark Bader of Missouri. In their last meeting Bader decisioned Malia 5-2. The winner will then face Skyler Holman of OSU. At 133 pounds, Joey Malia of Nebraska faces off against Chris McCormick of MO. In their last meeting Malia pinned McCormick in 1:05. The winner of the match will face Johnny Thompson of OSU, last year's National Runner-up. The most unusual match-up of the first round features Ronnie Delk of OSU against Dusty Spaulding of NEB at 141 pounds. On the twenty-second of February Delk beat Spaulding in sudden victory by a score of 5-3. The winner will face J.P. Reese, a notorious pinner, from Missouri, who earned the number one seed by pinning All-American Aaron Holker of ISU. Spaulding and Reese have not met; but Reese and Delk have. In a match that could materialize for the semifinals Delk has previously decisioned Reese of Missouri. At 149 pounds, Travis Shufelt from Nebraska will wrestle Jeremy Spates of Missouri. Shufelt who faced an early season elbow injury that kept him out of competition till January 19th has not wrestled Spates. Shufelt has strengthened the Nebraska lineup and is considered to be "dangerous" by the opposing coaches. The victor of the four-five match will face Jared Frayer of OU. At 157 pounds, Kenny Burleson of Missouri will face Doug Cieleski of OU. Burleson defeated Doug Cieleski by a score of 8-5. If Burleson wins he would face Bryan Snyder of Nebraska who had majored him earlier in the season. If Burleson cannot place in the top three he will then sweat out whether he will get a wildcard. The Missouri leader of wins owns a victory over #6 rated Gray Maynard of Michigan State. At 165 pounds, only four wrestlers will vie for the Big 12 crown as Nebraska did not enter a competitor. At 174 pounds, Nick Passalano of Iowa State faces off against Ty Wilcox of OSU. Passalano owns one unusual victory over Wilcox. In January, at the National Duals Passalano was leading Wilcox 4-2, when Wilcox lost his cool on the edge of the mat and punched the Cyclone. Wilcox was disqualified and Passalano was awarded the victory, that went on to win the dual for the Cyclone team. With the shot at facing #1 seed John Kopinsky on the line Wilcox will have to keep his cool. Wilcox has lost to Kopinsky by a score of 3-0. At 184 pounds, Dante Stone of MO faces the five seed Austen Palmer of ISU. In a tight match near the end of the regular season Stone defeated Palmer 2-0. The winner of the four-five match will face #1 seed Josh Lambrecht of Oklahoma. At 197 pounds, Tom Grossman of OU will face Will Gruenwald of OSU. In their last meeting Gruenwald lost by a score of 3-2. Previously, though, Gruenwald had beaten Grossman by a score of 3-1. The winner will face Sanderson of ISU. This could be the weight where all five wrestlers advance to Nationals. All of the Big 12 wrestlers at 197 are rated in the top fifteen nationally. The heavyweight class will lead off with Kevin Herron of MO against Mitch Manstedt of Nebraska. The two have not faced off previously. The winner will advance to meet up with highly ranked Leonce Crump of Oklahoma.
