KENOSHA, Wis. - North Dakota State's two-year reign as NCAA Division II champion hangs in the balance after Friday's first day of the national tournament at Wisconsin-Parkside. The Bison trail Central Oklahoma by 3.5 points heading into Saturday's final day, and the Bronco's seem to hold the cards going into the semifinals. Central Oklahoma made the most of their eight qualifiers, putting six into the semifinals. But that was of little comfort to coach David James. "By no means is this tournament over, but it was good to get six into the semis," he said. "We knew coming in that we were a couple of guys short, so we had to get the most out of our kids and I'm proud of that." The new bracketing format -- which placed wrestlers based on their regional finish rather than the traditional seeding format -- produced several early matchups between highly-ranked wrestlers and resulted in a number of upsets. The first major upset of the day came at 133 pounds when top-ranked and once-beaten Chris Peretti of Ashland lost in double-overtime to Jared Haberman of Western State, who went on to knock off fourth-ranked Jake Thielbar of North Dakota State. While Haberman rode into the semifinals, Peretti went 0-2 in the tournament, falling to Rob Jankowski of the host Rangers 6-4. "That was disappointing," Ashland coach Ray Konatch said. "We were happy to get six All-Americans in, but to have a guy who's lost once all year go two-and-out was really tough." Central Oklahoma looked poised to run away with the team title after a strong quarterfinal round, but the defending champs made a strong case in the second round of consolations, winning all five matches to pull ahead of Ashland into the runner-up slot. "After the semis tomorrow, we'll really know," coach Bucky Maughan said. "Right now, they're the team to beat with six in the semis. We were able to get five through in the wrestlebacks and we'll have to wrestle well." The Bison's returning champions, Todd Fuller (174) and Nick Severson (HWT) both avoided the upset bug and advanced to the semifinals. Peretti wasn't the only top-ranked wrestler to go down to defeat on Friday. Central Oklahoma's Michael Barreras was a first-round victim to Ricky Garcia of San Francisco State, as Garcia posted an 8-1 victory. Second-ranked heavyweight Josh Hendricks lost in the quarterfinals to Dupree Lacey of Central Washington, and 2000 champion Jon Madsen of South Dakota State was a first-round victim to Lyneil Mitchell of Gannon University.
