The East Regional Championships are scheduled for Millersville Univesity on Saturday, March 9. Millersville is the defending champion at this event, and is looking to use its homefield advantage to its favor. This is one of those "win it to stay in it" conferences, as the 10 East Regional champions all advance to the NCAA Tournament, with just two wild-cards left over for those who did not win. Participating teams include Millersville, American, Slippery Rock, Duquesne, Howard and Delaware State. The tournament will be without Millersville's long-time coach Shorty Hitchcock, who passsed away recently after battling cancer. Hitchcock has made an major impact on wrestling in the region, and has left a great legacy. The top individual athlete in the conference could be American's senior Marc Hoffer (149), who holds a No. 18 national ranking by Amateur Wrestling News. Hoffer is ending his career as the winningest wrestler in American history, with 120 career victories to date. He is hoping to end his career by claiming All-American honors at this year's NCAA meet. Among Hoffer's top teammates are Willie Harris at 125 and Aaron Baker at 174. A good indication of how these teams might finish was shown at the Eastern Regional Duals, which was held on Feb. 5. Three teams had a 3-1 record in the meet, but Duquesne won the team title, winning the tie-breaker with the most total individual matches won with 25. Among Duquesne's top performers this year have been Marc Allemange at heavyweight with an 18-8 record and Ryan Powell who has competed at 149 and 157 pounds and has a 23-8 record. Slippery Rock's only loss in the Eastern Regional Duals was to Duquesne, 21-19, with wins over Millersville, Howard and Delaware State. The top athlete for Slippery Rock this year has been Brad Cieleski, who has competed at 149 and 157 pounds, with a 31-8 record. Millersville also went 3-1 at the Duals, losing to Slippery Rock 19-18, but beating Duquesne 22-17. Millersville also beat Howard and Delaware State in the event. Derek Sola (141), Adam Schaaf (184) and Greg Enyon (197) are top competitors. Delaware State's top competitors this season have been Myron Drayton (125) and Mario Rinaldi (Hwt). Drayton has a 16-5 record, and Rinaldi is 17-6. Howard is led by Derek Butts (133), Efriam Walker (165) and Adrian Thompson (Hwt).
