NC STATE AND NORTH CAROLINA EXPECTED TO BATTLE FOR ACC TEAM HONORS The Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) is a five-team conference that has been dominated by two teams over the years, the Univ. of North Carolina and North Carolina State. The ACC Championships this year will be hosted Saturday, March 9 at Reynolds Coliseum on the campus of NC State in Raleigh, N.C., as part of the MatJam event, which is held alongside the Southern Conference Championships. NC State has the homefield advantage this time, something the Wolfpack would like to use to their advantage. In duals this year, North Carolina and NC State split their bouts. Both ended with a 4-1 record in the conference. Virginia was next with a 2-2 conference record, then Maryland at 1-3 and Duke at 0-4. North Carolina won 21-9 in Chapel Hill on January 16, while NC State scored a 22-12 win in Raleigh on February 13. Only one ACC wrestler holds a top 20 individual ranking in the most recent Amateur Wrestling News rankings: junior George Cintron of North Carolina State at 125 pounds, a defending ACC champion. NC State, under coach Bob Guzzo, is the defending team champion. Among NC State's other top athletes are two-time ACC champion Pierre Pryor at 165 pounds and Dustin Kawa at 174 pounds. North Carolina will be looking for their ninth conference title in the last 11 years, for coach Bill Lam. Carolina is led by seniors Brad Byers (141) and Matt Kenny (heavyweight). Kenny is a three-time defending ACC champion, while Byers has been a two-time ACC Tournament finalist. The Tar Heels have a pair of talented freshmen Chris Rodrigues (125) and Evan Sola (133), both who are title hopefuls. Carolina has battled injuries this year, but hopes to have enough guns to challenge for the team title. Virginia and Maryland have teams of similar abilities. Virginia won their dual meet this year, held in Charlottesville, by a tight 18-16 margin. Maryland's top Terrapin is Brandon York, who is looking to become the school's first four-time ACC Champion. He is now at 141-pounds after winning the last three years at 133 pounds. He completed the regular season undefeated in the ACC for the second straight year. York became Maryland's all-time wins leader this year and now has 137 victories in his Terrapin career. Jake Stork of Maryland (184) an ACC runner-up last year, is seeking a conference title. After losing to Virginia's Jimi Massey, 9-6, in the finals of last year's ACC Championships, Stork has defeated the defending ACC Champion twice this season. Josh Weidman (165) is looking to make the NCAA meet for the third time. Virginia's Jimi Massey (184) was ACC champion last year. Don Carlo-Clauss (165) was an ACC runner-up last year. Bob Seidel (141) and Brian Muir (174) placed third at last year's ACC Championships. Heavyweight Ryan Painter hopes to make an impact this year. Duke will be battling for individual honors. Mike Mitchell (165) finished the year 3-1 in the ACC with his only loss coming to Pierre Pryor of N.C. State . Tommy Hoang (125), a NCAA qualifier last year, fell to George Cintron of N.C. State in the championship match last year. Others to watch are Daegan Smith (197) and Franke Cornely (184). The name of the game will be qualifying individuals for the NCAA Championships, and this is where some of the best battles will be fought.
