Augsburg maintains lead after Semi's at Division III Championships

Augsburg maintained its lead at the NCAA Division III Championships held in Wilkes-Berre, Pa., by advancing 3 of five wrestlers from the semi-finals into tonights finals.  The Auggies also keep all of their remaining six wrestlers alive to lead the tournament with 82 points.  While Augsburg trys to maintain the #1 spot, two of the top five lost ground while the other two teams gained positions.    Wartburg who had 3 in the semi-finals and four in the consolations, lost all 3 of their semi-finals bouts, yet gained ground in the team race.  The Knights of Waverly, Iowa, kept all 7 of their remaining wrestlers alive in the consolations to move Wartburg into 2nd place with76 place.  Upper Iowa lost ground despite winning 3 of 4 semi-finals matches and keeping all 6 of their original wrestlers alive in the tournament.  The Peacocks slipped to 3rd behind Wartburg with 73 points.    UW-LaCrosse also made the best of the semi-final round by winning two of three semi bouts and keeping their remaing four wreslers alive moving them from 5th to fourth place edging Buena Vista College by a half a point. UW-LaCrosse has 59 points and Buena Vista has 58.5  Al Baxter's BV Beavers won only one of three semi-final bouts, but we still able to keep all five  of their grapplers alive. With the medal rounds yet to be wrestled for 3rd, 5th, and 7th place, the consolations could be the make or break point for many of the top ten teams. Wartburg, with no finalists,  has the most wrestlers in the consolations with 7, and they trail Augsburg by 6 points.  But the Auggies are not done, they have 3 in the finals and three in the consolations.  Not to be overlook is Upper Iowa who also has 3 finalists and 2 alive in the consolation, and they are only 9 points out of first place.    UW-Lacrosse and Ithaca College each have two finalists and two wrestlers in consolations.  Buena Vista, Loras, Manchester, The College of New Jersey, Mo ntclair State, Luther, UW-Stevens Point, Wilmington, Lawrence, and John Carroll all boast NCAA Division III individual finalists. The is the results oif the semi-final matches.    In the 125# semi finals #8 J. Henricks of Central(IA) lost a 1-0 dec. to #5 Jamie Taxted of Buena Vista(IA), while #6 Carlos. Restrepo of Ithaca decisioned  #7 M. Vos of ST. John's 2-1 to reach the finals.      In the 133# semi Steve Martin who is un-seeded and knocked off the #1 seed, pinned  #5 Dan Flounders of Trenton College in 1:46 to keep his dream tournament alive, and un-rated Tom Hall of Ithaca lost a major dec. to  #7 Ralph Acousta of Upper Iowa  12-4. 141# weight class was one of a few weight classes that moved the #1 and #2 seeds into the finals.  #1 Jesus Wilson from Upper Iowa decisioned  #4 Brad Fisher of Augsburg, 13-7.  The bottom of the 141# bracket saw the #2 seed Brady Cudd of UW-LaCrosse decision  #3 Wil Kelly of Wartburg 3-2.  Wilson is a Champ from 2000.    At 149# Luther College(IA) returning national champion and #1 seed Garrett Kurth made sure that he would appear in the finals for a second year by downing un-seeded Jim Morgan of King's college 7-3, while #6 Kris Harrington from Brockport(NY) dropped his semi match to #7 Darrell Carr from Manchester 5-2.    At 157#  top seed Jimmy Wallace of Wilmington will get to defend his seeding as he had a tech-fall over #5 Aaron Loewens of Buena Vista(IA) 22-6, and second seed Ryan Ciotoli of Ithaca(NY) lost a close 3-2 decision to #3 Matt Moscatello of Trenton(NJ).    165 pound semi's pairs Augsburg's(MN) top seeded Tony Abbott decked unseeded Pat Wilsbacher of BuenaVista(IA) 4:33, and second seed Jorge Borgen of Upper Iowa won  a 5-1 TB over #3 Noah Seital of Oswego State. This will pit the #1 and #2 seeded wrestler against each other.    AT 174# saw another pair of top seeds make it to the finals with  major decisions. Top seed for Augsburg(MN) is Nick Slack, the runner-up from 2001, and the Champ in 2000, majored  #4 Anthony Stewart  of CSU 13-4, while second seed Ed Aliakseyenka of MSU majored #6 Been Bly of UW-LaCrosse 17-6 for the 174 finals borths.    Another wight to see a 1 vs 2 seed in the finals, 184# Lawrence's top seeded Andy Kazik decisioned  #5 Paul Cleary of Loras 3-1, and second seeded Ricky Crone of Augsburg(MN) edged #6 Sonny Alvarez of Wartburg(IA) 2-1.    Augsburg's final top seed at 197# Kevin Rasmussen lost a tie-breaker to  #4 Yan White of UW-Stevens Point 3-2, while #6  seed Cliff\ Thompson of Upper Iowa needed a 3-1 sudden victory to down Tom Mulchy of OSU.    At 285#, the top seed Jason Ott, UW-LaCrosse majored  #4 LeRoy Gardner III of Wratburg(IA), 11-3,  and #3 Eric Urdzik of John Carroll downed unseeded Pat Thomas of Loras(IA) 14-8 to set up the finals matches for this evening.    Consolation matches for third, fifth and seventh places will be held at 5 p.m. (Eastern), with the 10 weight-class finals set for 7:30 p.m. (Eastern).
