After qualifying all ten of their wrestlers for the NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships in Wilkes-Barre, Pa., for the fifth time in a row, defending national champions Augsburg College looked like the team to beat, but the Auggies stumbled a little in the preliminary rounds loosing two top wrestlers. While the Auugies stumble, the Peacocks of Upper Iowa spread their wings and soar into 2nd place, despite qualify 4 less wrestlers than Augsburg. Though four Auggies, including two All-Americans, were eliminated in the consolation wrestlebacks, Augsburg College lead by Jeff Swensen still remains in the lead with 54.5 points, ahead of second-place Upper Iowa's 48.5. Wartburg (Iowa), in third place with 47.0 points, only 7 ½ points out of 1st, has the most wrestlers remaining in the NCAA-III field with seven, three of which are in the championship bracket. Wartburg, familiar with the challenge that it takes to win a title, could make a charge in the semi's and wrestlebacks. Two of the biggest upsets of the tournament occurred with Augsburg wrestlers. Defending national champion and three-time All-American Darin Bertram(125) dropped both his matches to be eliminated from the tournament in the wrestlebacks. Bertram lost to No. 8-seed Jeremy Hendricks of Central (Iowa) 8-4, then lost 9-5 to Wartburg's (Iowa) Heath Ropp 6-4 in the consolation bracket. Report are that Bertram was feeling the after-effects of a shoulder injury suffered in practice this past week. Another great loss came at 133 pounds where 1999 National Champ John Marchette ranked No. 1 in the nation at 133, rallied from a first-round upset loss with an impressive 20-10 win over WPI's (Mass.) DeShawn Fentress in his first consolation match, but gave up a quick throw and a first-period pin in his second consolation match, against Mike Waldron of Lycoming (Pa.), to be eliminated from the tournament. Despite loosing two top wrestlers, and earning six All-Americans with five remaining in the championship bracket, the Augsburg College wrestling team stayed in first place by six points after the second session of the NCAA Division III Wrestling National Championships Friday evening at the First Union Arena at Casey Plaza, and look to make a strong move in the semi and final rounds to secure the championship. Augsburg has the most wrestlers in the championship bracket, five. Upper Iowa has four wrestlers remaining in the championship bracket and six overall, while five schools have three wrestlers in the championship bracket. The five school include third place Wartburg with 3-4, fourth place Buena Vista College lead by coach Al Baxter has 3-2, 5th place UW-LaCrosee and 6th place Ithaca College both have 3-1 wrestlers going, while Randy Steward, coach of Loras(IA) has 3 wrestlers remaining, all in the championship bracket. A surprise in the race is 2nd place Upper Iowa led by Heath Grimm. The Peacocks brought 6 wrestlers to nationals, and all six are still alive this morning, 4 in the championship bracket, and 2 in the consolations. Lead by Jesus Wilson, a 2000 national champion, Upper Iowa's other semi-finalists are Ralph Acosta(125), Jorge Borgen(165), and Cliff Thompson(197). The Peacock's Thompson is rated #6 at 197, but finds himself in the semi's today guarutee no less than 6th place. Thompson avenged a pair of losses by beating Wartburg's #3 rated Alain Djoumessi in the quarters, and was one of four UIU wrestlers to reach the semi's. Prior to the tournament, UIU coach Heath Grimm would have liked to see his team in the hunt for a trophie, which would mean a top 4 finish. However, after placing 4 in the semi's and all sizx wrestlers alive this morning, coach Grimm states,"I think we are in a good position to raise our expectation a little bit." Wartburg has placed junior 141-pounder Wil Kelly of Dubuque, junior 184-pounder Sonny Alvarez of Aledo, Ill. and junior heavyweight LeRoy Gardner III of Golden Valley, Minn. into the semifinals of the NCAA Division III National Wrestling Championships. Seven of the Knights' nine-man contingent at Wilkes-Barre, Pa. are still alive going into Saturday's consolation quarterfinals and championship semifinals with senior 165-pounder Kevin Powell of Kirksville, Mo. and freshman 174-pounder Mark Sturm of Ringsted eliminated from competition. Coach Jim Miller stated that," Yesterday was a roller-coaster day. We wrestled hard in the first rounds, we just lost some heart breaking matches. I am proud of the way the kids came back, but we have a lot of work to do today." The wrestlers looking to make it into tonights D-III finals include the following semi-final match participants.
