ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Before a crowd of 3,517 and the Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld, the Navy wrestling team captured its 36th N-Star victory over Army Friday evening in Alumni Hall, defeating the Black Knights 22-9. "This was just another win - but a big win," Navy head coach Bruce Burnett said. "It is always fun to finish the regular season at home, especially in Alumni Hall. We had some guys step up to the challenge and perform well from top to bottom. Now, we are going to get ready for the Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association (EIWA) Championship coming up in two weeks." With the match starting off at the 133-pound weight class, Navy (11-6) pressed sophomore Nicholas Leshock into action against Army's T.J. Grider with starter Mike Simon (Jr./North Canton, Ohio) injured and the Shamokin, Pa., native responded with a huge win for the Mids. Leshock jumped out to a 4-2 lead after the second period and scored a two-point takedown with 45 seconds left in the match to seal the win, Leshock's first victory since the month of November. The much-anticipated 141-pound bout between Navy team captain Mark Conley (Sr./Exton, Pa.) and Army's Phillip Simpson came up next and Conley handled Simpson handily en route to a 5-0 victory. After the first period, there was no score but Conley got a one-point escape and then a point when Simpson was called for stalling. Conley then narrowly avoided a takedown and scored a takedown of his own to go up 4-0 in the second stanza. Freshman Pat Lukanich (LaGrange, Ill.) boosted Navy's overall lead to 9-0 with a sudden-death victory over Eric Miller in the 149-pound weight class. With the score tied 2-2 after a one-minute overtime period, Lukanich won the coin flip and chose the down position in the sudden death. Lukanich escaped Miller's hold six seconds into the period to avenge a 10-2 loss to Miller at the All-Academy Tournament three weeks ago. Army (7-8) picked up its first victory of the match in the 157-pound division when Jeremy Conner scored a 12-9 come-from-behind win over Michael Carbonaro (So./Blairstown, N.J.). The Mids got right back on the winning track when Luke Lazzo (Jr./Rochester Hills, Mich.) whipped Ron Schroeder in the 165-pound weight class for a 10-0 victory. In his first match since returning from a shoulder injury, Navy junior Jim Letchford (Jr./Marlton, N.J.) scored the winning two-point takedown with seven seconds left to defeat Matt Bernard, 6-5, in the 174-pound weight class. Trailing 2-1 after the first period, the match was tied at 4-4 after the second period. In the third stanza, Bernard chose the down position and then escaped to lead, 5-4, before Letchford's winning takedown. "I knew I could hit the elbow post to his left leg," Letchford said. "He was ready for my high-crotch move because that is what I beat their 184 pound guy on last year. Coach Burnett went over film with me this week to get me prepared, but I knew I had to pace myself since this was my first match back." Travis Manion (So./Doylestown, Pa.) dropped a 7-2 decision to Army's Graig Cooper in the 184-pound weight class, but teammate Mike Bigrigg (Sr./Santa Ana, Calif.) countered with an easy 9-4 victory over John Paxton in the 197-pound division. The win extended Bigrigg's winning streak to seven and clinched the N-Star for the Mids. In another exciting match, Navy heavyweight Steve Kovach (Jr./Parkesburg, Pa.) broke a 5-5 tie with 18 seconds left in the match, scoring a takedown to defeat Brendon Devlin, 7-5, as the crowd erupted. Navy 125-pounder Sam Gray (Fr./Essex, Vt.) fell to Matt Magennis, 11-6, in the final match of the night. "I love wrestling in Alumni Hall, and I hope we can wrestle in here more often," Letchford said. "The fans were great, and I think that was a reason why we wrestled so well tonight."
