U.S. men's freestyle team undefeated after day one of the Kiev Grand Prix in Kiev, Ukraine, Feb. 21 Four member of the United States men's freestyle team advance to the medal rounds at the Kiev Grand Prix in Kiev, Ukraine, Feb. 22. 2001 World bronze medalist Joe Williams, Coralville Iowa (Sunkist Kids) and Tim Hartung, Minneapolis, Minn. (Minnesota Storm) have advance to the gold-medal match at 74 kg and 97 kg respectively. Chris Bono, Gilbert, Iowa (Sunkist Kids) and Tolly Thompson, Lincoln, Neb. (Sunkist Kids) will both compete in the bronze medal matches at their weight classes. Bono and Thompson will face Russia in their matches, Bono at 66 kg and Thompson at 120 kg. Williams won his pool, then pinned Alick Muzaev of Ukraine in 4:10 to advance to the semifinals where he decisioned Ovata Kuniniko of Japan. Williams will face Ukraine in the gold-medal match. Hartung advanced out of his pool right in to the semifinals where he defeated Krazimir Kochev of Bulgaria in the semifinals. Kochev was a 2001 World silver medalist.
