With the first weekend of Division III qualifying rounds over, the field looks impressive for the NCAA National Championships hosted by the University of Scranton and King's College at the First Union Arena in Wilkes-Barre, Pa., March 1 and 2. The Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) held its qualifying tournament on Thursday, Feb. 14 at Cowles Fieldhouse in Indianola, Iowa. The IIAC advanced an unequaled number of 34 wrestlers to the National Championships. The top two wrestlers in each weight class automatically qualified for the national meet and there were 14 wildcard spots to battle for. Wartburg College, ranked second in the latest and final Brute/Adidas National Coaches Association Dual Team Rankings, won its 10th straight IIAC team title with 160 points. This is the third longest conference winning streak in the nation. Pacific Lutheran of Oregon won 16 straight Northwest Conference titles while Augsburg College has currently won 15 straight MIAC titles going into this weekends action. Luther College placed second with 135.5 points, followed by Upper Iowa with 122.5, Loras with 114, Buena Vista with 108.5, Coe with 88, Simpson with 67, Central with 52.5, Cornell with 35 and Dubuque scoring 4. Wartburg was able to advance someone in every weight class except for 133 pounds. Sixth-ranked Mark Strum (Armstrong, Iowa) claimed the 174 pound title and fourth-ranked Alain Djoumessi (Quest, Cameroon) was crowned the champion at 197 pounds. The other champion for Wartburg was fourth-ranked LeRoy Gardner III (Golden Valley, Minn.) in the 285-pound weight division. Luther College's 165-pounder, Garrett South (Cumberland, Iowa), claimed the title in his weight class as a number four seed and was named the Conference's Outstanding Wrestler. South leads Luther in the most wins column and in most falls with 16 on the season. The Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Championships are sending 12 qualifiers to the national tournament. The winners of each weight class automatically qualify and there are two wild card spots awarded. UW-LaCrosse won the WIAC tournament this year, extending its conference winning streak to five in a row. They will also be sending six individual champions to the national tournament. At 133 pounds, Josh Habeck (Schofield, Wis./UW-LaCrosse), currently ranked second in the nation, claimed his second career WIAC title and improved his record to 32-4. Three members of the UW-LaCrosse team all claimed their second consecutive conference titles. Second-ranked Brady Cudd (River Falls, Wis.) at 141 pounds, Nick Patenaude (Oconto, Wis.) at 165 pounds and fifth-ranked Ben Bly (La Crescent, Minn.) at 174 pounds. Cudd improved to 29-3 for the year, Patenaude pushed his record to 24-9 this season and Bly improved to 16-5 on the year. Top-ranked Jason Ott (Elroy, Wis./UW-LaCrosse) finished his conference career with this third heavyweight title. Ott has an impressive 28-5 record with 18 wins by pin. Out of the New England College Conference, 12 wrestlers moved on to the national meet. Springfield College took the team title by a margin of 136.5-116.5 over second place Johnson & Wales College. The top wrestler in each weight class automatically qualifies for the national meet in addition to two wild card selections. Coming in third was WPI at 93, followed by Plymouth State at 66.5 and rounding out the top five was Trinity at 66. Springfield, ranked tenth in the nation, advanced four competitors to nationals. Second-ranked Calvin Johnson (Providence, R.I.) won his third conference title at 125 pounds. He was also named outstanding wrestler of the meet and improved to 39-2 on the season with four pins. The other qualifiers for Springfield include Keith Poloskey (Middle Island, N.Y.), who is ranked fifth nationally in the 141-pound division with a 35-1 record. Poloskey leads the team with seven pins on the season. William Ivatts (Foxboro, Mass./Springfield), a 149-pounder, will carry a 37-6 record to the meet and sixth-ranked Marcelle Roberson (Dover, Del./Springfield) will boast a 31-2 mark on the season at 285 pounds. In the Centennial Championships, Western Maryland laid claim to the conference title by outdistancing Muhlenberg College 106.5-80.5 in the tournament. Out of this championship meet, 10 wrestlers will advance to the National Championships to compete for the honor of being a national champion. Coming in third was Ursinus with 70.5 points, followed by Gettysburg with 39, then John Hopkins with 32. Rounding out the competition was Washington & Lee with 28 points. Western Maryland will bring five competitors to the meet including two-time All-American Chris McNally (Pomfret, Md.) at 197 pounds. The 125-pounder, Vinny Pedalino (Toms River, N.J.) will also be making a trip to the national meet. Both McNally and Pedalino will be making their third-straight trip to nationals. The other conferences that have already competed their tournaments include the MAC Championships which will send 12 qualifiers, the Great Lakes Regional which qualified 13 competitors, the Empire Conference Championships and the Metro Championships which qualified 15 participants each. There are only three conferences left to battle for a place at nationals. These tournaments include the Midwest Regionals, the Ohio Athletic Conference Championships and the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. They will send 13, 10 and 14 qualifiers respectively to nationals. The Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) will be hosted by Ohio Northern on Saturday, Feb. 23 at 10:00 a.m. in the ONU Sports Center in Ada. The Midwest Regionals will be held on Saturday, Feb. 23, at Rose-Hulman IT and the MIAC Championships will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 26, in Northfield, Minn. At the OAC Championships, there will be seven teams competing for the conference crown and bids to the National Championships. These teams include eighth-ranked John Carroll University, nineteenth-ranked Ohio Northern University, twenty-ninth-ranked Muskingum College, Baldwin-Wallace University, Heidelberg College, Mount Union College and Wilmington University. Ohio Northern is the defending OAC champion by a slim margin of 3.5 points over John Carroll. Look for John Carroll to make a run at the team title putting the pressure on Ohio Northern. John Carroll was undefeated in conference dual-meet action this year going 6-0. The OAC will qualify 12 men for the NCAA Championships this year. The winner of every weight class will automatically move on along with two other wild cards. Seven OAC individual champions from the 10 weight classes return to the mat this year to defend their 2001 titles and six runner ups will look to upset those plans. In the 125-pound weight class both Joe Metcalf (Parma, Ohio/Mount Union) and Jose Smith (Cambridge, Ohio/Muskingham) will be returning to the OAC Championships to battle for a place at nationals. Metcalf is the defending OAC champion with a mark of 10-2 on the season and Smith who was the runner up. At 149 pounds, Mike Markovic (Brecksville, Ohio/John Carroll) is currently ranked seventh in the nation and the defending champion from the 2001 OAC Championships. He was undefeated in dual action this season with a 29-7 record. The 157 pound division is expected to feature the champion and runner-up from last years meet. Top-ranked Jimmy Wallace (Germantown, Ohio/Wilmington) is the defending champion boasting an impressive 25-0 record going into the tournament. Drew Zollars (Canton, Ohio/Mount Union) seems to be the big obstacle for Wallace to overcome again this year and has a 16-6 mark of his own for the season. A solid match up at 165 pounds could come if the defending champion Dan Anderson (Chardon, Ohio/Mount Union) faces off with last year's runner up, Dan Kull (Perrysburg, Ohio/John Carroll). Anderson has an outstanding 12-4 record while Kull will bring in an 18-8 record. Ohio Northern has dominated the 184-pound weight class with both the champion and runner up from last year on this year's squad. Jeremy Kosch (Oakwood, Ohio/Ohio Northern) is the
