Wartburg tops Luther College’s Paul Solberg Invitational; Augsburg shows strength with a split team

Wartburg College of Waverly, Iowa came out on top at the Paul Solberg Invitational, held on Saturday, Feb. 2, at Luther College in Decorah, Iowa. Second-ranked Wartburg boasted five individual champions to outdistance host Luther College by 36.5 points for the victory.     Wartburg started things off strong at 125 lbs. with Heath Ropp (Kalona, Iowa/Wartburg) and Brian Frost (Gilbertville, Iowa/Wartburg) placing first and third respectively. Ropp secured first in the weight class with a technical fall against Ian McGeorge (Kansas City, Mo./Central Missouri State) in the middle of the second period. Frost added his third place finish with a decision over Ryan Thompson (Norwalk, Iowa/Luther College).     Fifth-ranked Kevin Bratland (Dakota City, Iowa/Wartburg), at 157 lbs., added another first-place finish to Wartburg's successful day.  Bratland charted a 12-4 major decision to secure the top spot, continuing his winning streak and increasing his record to 30-6 for the season .     Other top finishers included Tony Ganas (Des Plaines, Ill./Wartburg) and Gary Tate (Sterling, Ill./Wartburg) at 149 lbs. Ganas and Tate took first and second respectively with Ganas pinning Tate for the victory.     The final two top finishers were second-ranked Alain Djoumessi (Cameroon, Africa/Wartburg) at 197 lbs. and fourth-ranked LeRoy Gardner III (Golden Valley, Minn./Wartburg) 285 lbs.  Both Djoumessi and Gardner beat their competitors from Central Missouri State by a decision to obtain their victories. Djoumessi improves to a 26-7 mark for the season and Gardner boasts an impressive 15-1 record for the Knights.  In the 133-pound weight division Joe Havig (Osage, Iowa/Wartburg) ended up with fourth place after having to forfeit in the final match to Wade Kilgore (Edmond, Okla./Central Missouri State).     Final team scores for the invitational were Wartburg 168, Luther 131.5, Central Missouri State University 122, Augsburg 117.5, St. Olaf 23.5 and Carleton 5.5.     Augsburg split their team for the weekend with half attending the Paul Solberg Invitational at Luther College in Decorah, Iowa and the other half wrestling at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire Invitational. The portion of the team competing at Luther College placed fourth, wrestling some tough matches.     In the 141-pound weight class, fourth-ranked Brad Fisher (Austin, Minn./Augsburg) slated a first place finish. Fisher acquired his win with a technical fall over Drew Passley (Webb City, Mo./Central Missouri State) at 6:40 in the finals. Fisher who is currently Augsburg's leader in major decisions, with 11 on the season, also leads the team in technical falls with seven.     At 174 lbs., top-ranked Nick Slack (Belle Plaine, Minn./Augsburg) recorded a first-place finish with a pin over eighth-ranked Mark Sturm (Armstrong, Iowa/Wartburg).  Slack pushes his season record to a prominent 33-1 on the season and comes in second on the team with 19 pins.      Another top finisher for Augsburg at the Luther Invitational was 184-pounder, Mike Cuperus (Worthington, Minn./Aurgsburg).  Cuperus registered an upset over fifth-ranked Sonny Alvarez (Aledo, Ill/Wartburg) with a 5-2 decision.  Alvarez dropped to 17-8 on the season and Cuperus increased his record to 25-5 for the year.       At the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire Invitational, Augsburg showed great strength with a partial team. They finished second with 70.5 points to UW-Stevens Point which had 87.5 points.  The final scoring for the rest of the field was UW-LaCrosse with 69, UW-Oshkosh with 50, UW-Eau Claire with 42.5, UW-Whitewater with 38.5, Concordia with 36, UW-Eau Claire with 14.5, UW-Platteville with 11 and rounding out the schools was UW-Plattleville B with 10.     Augsburg started off with a first-place finisher at 125 lbs. with top-ranked Darin Bertram (Herman, Minn./Augsburg).  Bertram edged out eighth-ranked Davey Starks (Stoughton, Wis./Eau Claire) with a 4-3 decision to increase his record to an impressive 27-1 on the season.       At 165 lbs, second-ranked Tony Abbott (Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Augsburg) slipped away with a 7-5 decision over Cody Koenig (Underwood, Iowa/Stevens Point).  Abbott advanced his record to an excellent 31-4 for the season. He also leads Augsburg in pins with 21 so far this season.     Ricky Crone (Apple Valley, Minn./Augsburg), ranked second in Division III, secured a top place finish in the 184-pound weight division.  Crone edged out Joe Bavlnka (Germantown, Wis./Stevens Point) with a 2-1 decision.  This win pushes Crone, a transfer from Northern Iowa, to an incredible 30-1 on the season.     Even with a split squad, Augsburg managed to capture the Outstanding Wrestler award at both invitationals.  At the Paul Solberg Invitational at Luther College, Nick Slack was the recipient of the honor and at UW-Eau Claire, Darin Bertram was honored with the award.     Up next Augsburg, is a dual with 22nd-ranked University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point on Friday, Feb. 8 in Minneapolis, Minn.      UW-Stevens Point, who moved up three spots in the most current Division III rankings, is coming off a title win at the UW-Eau Claire Invitational on Saturday, Feb. 2.  UW-Stevens Point is looking to continue its winning streak through this weekend.       Top-ranked Kevin Rasmussen (Owatonna, Minn./Augsburg) is expected to meet with fifth-ranked Yan White (Antigo, Wis./UW-Stevens Point) at 197 lbs.  White, who is coming off of a top place finish at the UW-Eau Claire Invitational, is expected to make an interesting match-up with Rasmussen, who did not wrestle last weekend.     Other ranked wrestlers anticipated to compete include top-ranked Darin Bertram at 125 lbs., top-ranked John Marchette at 133 lbs. and top-ranked Nick Slack at 174, all of Augsburg.  Eighth-ranked Nathan Preslaski (Pulaski, Wis./UW-Stevens Point)  is also expected to compete in the 157 pound weight class.
