USA beats Belarus 21-18 at the Little Caesars Save USC Wrestling Showdown in Pueblo, Colo.

Closing the match with a pin and a technical fall, the United States came from behind to defeat Belarus, 21-18, at the Little Caesars Save USC Wrestling Showdown, held at Massari Arena in Pueblo, Colo., Feb. 6.    Michael Lightner opened the dual for the USA with a 4-0 win over Alexander Karnitzki at 60 kg. Lightner scored a one-point takedown in the first period, and added a three-point takedown with exposure in the second period.    Mourad Gaidarov won the first match for Belarus, with a tight 4-3 win over Donny Pritzlaff at 74 kg. The key move was a two-point counter tilt by Gaidarov in the second period, giving him a 4-1 lead late in the bout.    Bobby Lashley came back with an exciting 4-0 win over Beibulat Musaev at 84 kg. Lashley, who had tremendous speed with his attacks, had a three-point leg attack for exposure in the first period and was never challenged.    After an intermission, Belarus ran off three straight wins.    2001 World Champion Herman Kontoev of Belarus scored a 10-0 technical fall over Tim Dernlan at 55 kg. Kontoev jumped to a 7-0 lead in the first period, with a series of takedowns and tilts, then added three more second period points to end the bout at 3:53.    Veteran Alexander Guzov added another win for Belarus, a 7-4 win over Jason Kutz at 60 kg. With the score tied at 4-4, Guzov scored a two-point exposure and a takedown to close out the match.    At 65 kg, in another close battle, Nikolai Savin of Belarus scored a 3-2 win over Mike Eierman.    In one of the most competitive bouts, 2001 U.S. Nationals champion Ramico Blackmon defeated Sergei  Demtchenko, who was fourth in the 2000 Olympics, with a 2-1 overtime referee's decision. Blackmon scored a takedown in regulation and a point off the clinch in overtime for his two points. In the closing seconds, Demtchenko pushed Blackmon out of bounds, and the Belarus team called for exposure points that were not awarded.    Hometown favorite Jason Tapia, a USC student, was defeated at 85 kg by Sergei Borchenko in an 11-0 technical fall in 1:27. Borchenko scored a series of tilts on the mat to rack up the points for the win.    Daniel Cormier brought the USA back into contention with an exciting pin over Alexander Shemarov at 96 kg. Cormier launched Shemarov with a lateral drop and scored the fall in 1:20.    Kerry McCoy closed out the victory for the USA with an impressive 10-0 technical fall over Boris Grinkevich in 2:51. McCoy was able to take down and turn Grinkevich at will.    A lively crowd of 1,650 attended the dual meet. Proceeds from the event go to the USC Thunderwolf Wrestling Club, and to help in the effort to reinstate varsity wrestling at the Univ. of  Southern Colorado.    2000 Olympic bronze medalist Lincoln McIlravy, USA Wrestling's new National Freestyle Resident Coach, gave a free youth clinic prior to the start of the competition.
