Wimberly selected as Florida Sports Amateur Athlete of the Year

Robert Wimberly has been selected as Florida Sports Amateur Athlete of the Year for 2002. He will be receiving this honor on February 12, 2002 at a reception held in Tallahassee, Florida with a presentation being made by Lt. Governor Frank Brogan. Robert is a graduate of Ohio University where he was an NCAA All-American. He wrestled in USA national tournaments placing in the top 5 from 1979 through 1985. In 1980 he won first place in the Freestyle competition. Robert has wrestled in the Florida Sunshine State Games since they began in 1980 and has won in his division 7 of those years. Other accomplishments include wrestling in the Collegiate / Open division of the Sunshine Open placing twice and winning three times. He is also on the Board of Directors for the Florida Amateur Wrestling Association. Both of his sons, following in the footsteps of their father hold many state and national titles. They attend St. Thomas High School where Robert is the assistant wrestling coach. When not involved with wrestling, Robert is a Fire Fighter/Paramedic with the City of Miami. He and his wife, Sue, live in Broward County Florida.
