The Iowa Conference duals, held Saturday, Jan. 26 at Simpson College and Central College, proved to be one of the toughest ever with a fierce field of competitors in both locations. The Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference splits the annual duals between two sites. This year Simpson College in Indianola, Iowa hosted half of the conference and Central College of Pella, Iowa played host to the other half. Central hosted two teams that ranked in the most recent adidas/BRUTE Division III Top 30 Coaches poll. The teams attending were second-ranked Wartburg College, sixth-ranked Upper Iowa University, Central College, Cornell College and the University of Dubuque. Wartburg and Upper Iowa both rolled past their competition with dual scores of Wartburg over Central 34-7, Wartburg over Cornell 43-3 and Wartburg over Dubuque 57-0. Upper Iowa posted scores over Central of 24-19, over Cornell of 38-7 and over Dubuque of 48-9. Even though the two schools did not wrestle each other, they handily defeated the rest of the field, with Wartburg coming out on top. Wartburg showed great strength with the leadership of second-ranked Alain Djoumessi (Cameroon, Africa/Wartburg) at 197 lbs. and fourth-ranked LeRoy Gardner (Golden Valley, Minn./Wartburg) at 285 lbs. Wartburg was able to keep its Iowa Conference duals winning streak alive, extending it to 65 in a row and dropping only three matches throughout the duals. One of the only surprises for the Wartburg squad was the upset of Tony Ganas (Des Plaines, Ill./Wartburg) by Central's C.T. Hammond (Boone, Iowa/Central) at 149 lbs. with a score of 4-2 in overtime. The rest of scores for this section of the duals were Central over Dubuque 42-6, Central over Cornell 32-13 and Cornell over Dubuque 40-12. Final standings were Wartburg (3-0), Upper Iowa (3-0), Central (2-2), Cornell (1-3) and Dubuque (0-4). In the other half of the duals, Luther edged out Simpson to take the title. With all five teams competing ranked in the most recent adidas/Brute Division III Top 30 Coaches Poll, the competition was strong. Luther's 149-pounder, Garrett Kurth (Waukon, Iowa/Luther) is currently ranked No. 1 in the nation for Division III. Kurth was undefeated in the duals pushing him to 22-5 on the season. Luther only lost one dual against Loras, 34-14, at the beginning of the day. They defeated Simpson 26-15, they edged out Buena Vista 25-22 and dropped Coe 33-13. Other wrestler's to go undefeated include Buena Vista's third-ranked Jamie Taxted (Duncombe, Iowa/Buena Vista) at 125 lbs. and seventh-ranked Dax Doran (Harlan, Iowa/Buena Vista) at 285 lbs. Taxted pushed his record to 13-2 on the season with five major decisions. Buena Vista went 2-2 in the duals with wins against Loras 23-16 and a defeat over Coe 34-15. Simpson edged out Buena Vista 20-19 and triumphed over Coe 25-20. Loras defeated Simpson 25-13 and Coe found their only win over Loras 24-16. This season is the first time Simpson is starting six freshmen. One of those talented stars included Clint Manny (Peru, Iowa/Simpson, at 149 lbs. Manny leads Simpson with 30 wins and is currently tied for fifth place on the list for most wins in the latest NCAA Div. III Wrestling Coaches Assoc. Statistics Report. The final standings for this portion were Luther (3-1), Simpson (2-2), Loras (2-2), Buena Vista (2-2) and Coe (1-3). Elsewhere in Division III wrestling, there was a battle of the two-time defending national champions in NCAA Divisions II and III on Tuesday night at Augsburg's Si Melby Hall. Augsburg College of Minneapolis, Minn. faced off with North Dakota State of Fargo, N.D. Winning seven of ten individual matches, Augsburg came away with the 26-12 victory. Augsburg has won the last two meetings in the dual series with the Bison holding the all-time series lead at 5-2. Aurgsburg also improved their season dual record to an impressive 14-0, extending their two-season, consecutive match-winning streak to 22 with the triumph. One highlight of the night came in the 133-pound weight division when top-ranked John Marchette (Canual Fulton, Ohio/Augsburg) executed a takedown 17 seconds into overtime to beat Jake Thielbar (Faribault, Minn./North Dakota State). Augsburg's top-ranked Nick Slack (Belle Plaine, Minn./Augsburg) matched up with Thad Pike (Hayfield, Minn./North Dakota State) at 174 lbs. after some changes in the North Dakota State line-up. Slack secured a major decision in the match moving him to 30-1 for the season. North Dakota State found success with Nick Severson (Hayfield, Minn./North Dakota State) who is the top-ranked heavyweight in Division II. Severson pinned Mike Flanagan (St. Paul, Minn./Augsburg) in the start of the second period. Severson remains undefeated on the season moving his record to 8-0. Michael Fiedler (Sauk Centre, Minn./North Dakota State), ranked fourth in Division II at 165 lbs. also added a win for North Dakota State. He defeated Augsburg's Tony Abbott (Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Augsburg) who is ranked second in Division III. Augsburg will split their squad this weekend. Half will be attending the All-Lutheran Tournament at Luther, Iowa and the rest will be travelling to the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire Tournament on Saturday, Feb. 2. They have not yet decided how to split the team. UW-Eau Claire is expecting to host mostly second string teams from UW-Oshkosh, UW-River Falls, UW- Platteville, UW-LaCrosse, UW-Steven's Point, UW-Whitewater, Augsburg and Concordia of Moorehead, Minn. The teams scheduled to participate in the Luther Tournament include second-ranked Wartburg, Central Missouri State, Carleton, and St. Olaf. This will be the fourth time No. 1 Augsburg has met No. 2 Wartburg in a tournament setting this season. Wartburg is expected to bring second-ranked 197-pounder Alain Djoumessi (Camaroon, Africe/Wartburg), third-ranked Joe Havig (Osage, Iowa/Wartburg) in the 141-pound weight class and third-ranked Will Kelly (Dubuque, Iowa/Wartburg) at 141 pounds. Augsburg's head coach Jeff Swenson knows the competition is going to be tough this weekend. "We won't be overconfident. Confidence is good, but only to a certain point. Our goal this weekend is to simply wrestle better than we did against North Dakota State, to know that we have improved," he said.
