Terry Brands, assistant wrestling coach at Montana State University-Northern, has been hired as head wrestling coach for the Chattanooga Mocs, UTC Athletic Director Oval Jaynes announced Monday afternoon. A former Olympic wrestler, Brands is in his second season at MSUN after several years assisting top-flight programs at Nebraska and Iowa. He will assume duties at UTC on March 15, 2002. "We are pleased that Terry Brands has accepted our offer to be the head wrestling coach at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga," Jaynes said. "He brings an outstanding background in intercollegiate, Olympic and freestyle wrestling. His background with Dan Gable, as one of the top wrestlers in the history of the sport, provides us with a coach who has tremendous experience and that experience will be evident in our program." Brands was an Olympic Freestyle Wrestling Bronze Medallist at the 2000 Summer Games in Sydney, Australia. He was the 2000 Olympic Team Trials Champion. Brands is a two-time World Freestyle Wrestling Champion and five-time World Team Trials Champion. A three-time Big Ten Wrestling Champion at Iowa, Brands has extensive experience working with young wrestlers and student athletes toward enhancing talent, building motivation and developing winning attitudes. He spent 10 summers teaching competitive techniques and leading training demonstrations at the prestigious Dan Gable Wrestling Camps at Iowa. Brands earned his BGS in Human Development and Sport from Iowa in August of 1992. He takes over for former UTC coach Mark Leen, who resigned his position on Nov. 7. The Mocs, who have been under the direction of interim head coach Franky James, are 5-8 in dual matches on the season and have consecutive wins over Appalachian State and Anderson College.
