Missouri Valley College, an NAIA school from Marshall, Mo., was voted as the top North American women's wrestling team in January, the second month in a row that the Vikings held the top spot. Missouri Valley College received 97 points and four first place vote. Missouri Valley College is currently the top team in the U.S. college rankings. The Vikings are the defending champion at the USA Wrestling Women's Senior Nationals and the USA Wrestling University National Championships. Placing second is the defending CIS National champions, the Univ. of Calgary, with 93 points and one first-place vote. Calgary was the No. 1 ranked team in the North American pre-season rankings in November, but slipped to a No. 5 ranking in December. Simon Fraser, an NAIA school in British Columbia, Canada was ranked third with 90 points, followed by Brock Univ. of Ontario, Canada in fourth with 86 points and the Univ. of Minnesota-Morris, a NCAA Div. II school in the United States in fifth with 84 points. Rounding out the Top 10 teams are Lakehead Univ., Pacific Univ., the Univ. of Alberta, Cumberland College and Lock Haven Univ. The team ranking poll is elected by a panel of women's college coaches, three from Canada and two from the United States. Eligible for ranking are college varsity and club women's wrestling programs. Women's wrestling is a growing sport in Canada and the United States on the college level. The International Olympic Committee has named women's freestyle wrestling as the newest sport added to the Summer Olympic Games program. The United States and Canada are among the most successful women's wrestling nations in the world. The individual rankings are selected by TheMat.com, with assistance from the panel of coaches. Athletes who are considered for ranking are eligible full-time college students, and are members of their college women's varsity or club program, or a member of their college men's wrestling team. Due to the change in women's international weight classes, and an adjustment suggested by U.S. college coaches, there are now eight weight classes under consideration for TheMat.com North American Women's college rankings. Previous rankings used the previous six international weight classes. FILA, the international wrestling federation, has changed the women's weight classes for the Senior level, starting on January 1st. The new weight classes will be 48 kg (105.5 lbs.), 51 kg (112 lbs.). 55 kg (121 lbs.), 59 kg (130 lbs.), 63 kg (138.5 lbs.), 67 kg (147.5 lbs.), 72 kg (158.5 lbs.). U.S. and Canadian colleges also recognize an eighth weight class, 77 kg (169.5 lbs.) in their college tournaments and dual meets. Five of the six of the top-ranked wrestlers from the December rankings are still in No. 1 positions, even though their weight classes have changed. They are Carol Huyhn of Simon Fraser at 48 kg (105.5 lbs.), Tonya Verbeek of Brock at 55 kg (121 lbs.), Sara McMann of Lock Haven at 63 kg (138.5 lbs.), Toccara Montgomery of Cumberland College at 67 kg (147.5 lbs.) and Jenna Pavlik (Lock Haven) at 77 kg (169.5 lbs.).
