KUTZTOWN, PA - Kutztown University will host the 2002 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Wrestling Championships when KU welcomes the 59th Annual event to Keystone Arena on Friday, January 25-Saturday January 26.    Nine teams will hit the mats on Friday night with first session beginning at 6:00 PM.  Session two will begins Saturday morning at 11:00 AM with the semifinal round and two rounds of consolations.  Opening ceremonies will begin at 5:45 PM, followed by the Championship, third and fifth-place finals running simultaneously on three mats, starting at 6:00 PM.    All-session tickets will cost $18 per adult and $5 per student. Individual sessions for adults cost $7 for the first and second sessions and $8 for the finals, while students pay $2 per session.    A very talented field of grapplers will compete in the PSAC Wrestling Championships.  The field includes six returning champions, 10 championship finalist, 36 former placewinners, 11 Division I ranked wrestlers and one Division II ranked wrestler.  Two grapplers will also try to make their mark in the conference record books, one going for his fourth title, while the other goes for his third.    Edinboro and Lock Haven are the team favorites heading into the weekend's action.  Lock Haven took the team championship in 2001, breaking Edinboro's streak of three-straight championship titles (2000, 1999, 1998).  The Bald Eagles won with 153.50 points, while the Fighting Scots were second with 126.  Bloomsburg was third with 119 points, followed by Clarion (100.50), East Stroudsburg (57), Slippery Rock (52.50), Kutztown (34), Millersville (32.50), and Shippensburg (23).      Lock Haven has won 19 total team titles.  Bloomsburg and Clarion have 13 each, while Edinboro has notched five, East Stroudsburg and Millersville garnered two crowns each and Slippery Rock has won one. West Chester, which no longer sponsors wrestling, accounts for the other three titles.    Lock Haven is currently ranked 11th in the latest National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) poll and is under the direction of 12th-year head coach Carl Poff.  Fourteenth-ranked Edinboro is coached by Tim Flynn, who is in his fifth year at the helm.  Bloomsburg enters the tournament under interim head coach Dave Kennedy.  Clarion is guided by fifth-year coach Ken Nellis, while East Stroudsburg is directed by third-year coach Angelo Borzio.  Second-year head coach Robert Fisher will lead the host Golden Bears of Kutztown.  Millersville will be guided by veteran coach Floyd "Shorty' Hitchcock, who is in his 18th year with the Marauders.  Newcomers Donald Tabar and Chris Elliott will lead Shippensburg and Slippery Rock, respectively.    The following is a breakdown by weight class for the 2002 PSAC Championships.    125: Lock Haven's Trap McCormack is back at 125 to defend his PSAC title.  He is ranked 18th in the latest Amateur Wrestling News (AWN) poll.  McCormack finished third in 1999 and fourth in 2000. Challenging for gold this year will be Kutztown's Brian Burzynski, who finished third last year and fifth in 1999 and 2000.  Bloomsburg's Brock Hite, who placed fourth in 2001 and sixth in 2000 will also compete, along with Clarion's Peter Derstine who was fifth last season, and Slippery Rock's Adam Renner, who placed sixth in 2001.  Also in the mix are East Stroudsburg's Jon Clouser, Edinboro's Shawn Bunch, Millersville's Adam Bunting, and Shippensburg's Robbie Getz.    133: The 133-pound weight class could be an all out battle between Clarion's eighth-ranked Rad Martinez, Edinboro's 13th-ranked Corey Ace, Millersville's Jason Gabrielson, and Slippery Rock's Chris Matarrese.  Martinez finished second last year at 133, while Ace was second at 141 in 2001.  Gabrielson transferred from Edinboro after winning at 125 in 1999 and finishing 3rd in 2000 and fifth at 118 in 1998.  Matarrese was third in 2000, fourth in 1999 and sixth in 1998. Lock Haven's Chris Spealler who placed fourth at 141, and Kutztown's Kolhby O'Donnell, who is ranked fifth in the latest Division II poll, earned a fifth-place finish in 1998 (at 126 lbs.) and 2001 will also challenge, along with Bloomsburg's Brandon White, East Stroudsburg's T.J. Cuff, and Shippensburg's Todd Paradine.    141: Seventh-ranked Mike Maney from Lock Haven returns in search of his second gold at 141.  Edinboro's 15th-ranked Chad Caros and East Stroudsburg's Brad Kleckner, who was third in 2000 and fifth in 2001, will attempt to unseat Maney.  Also in the running is Shippenburg's Jason Zinn, who placed fifth in 2000 and sixth in 2001 at 133; Slippery Rock's Eric Eyth who finished fifth at 149 last year; along with Bloomsburg's Adam Castner, Clarion's Stephen Stremple, Kutztown's Dominic Sabia, and Millersville's Derek Sola.    149: The odds-on favorite here is Lock Haven's returning champion Jamarr Billman, who is ranked second nationally.  The only other returning placewinner is Clarion's Dominic Surra.  He placed fourth last season and sixth in 1998 (at 126 lbs.).  A young, but talented group that consists of one junior, two sophomores and four freshmen will join Billman and Surra.  Junior Devin DeRenzis of Bloomsburg, sophomores Keith Kleckner of East Stroudsburg and Jared Rosenfeld of Shippensburg, and freshmen Michael Ashby of Edinboro, Craig Kunsman of Kutztown, Joey Lovello of Millersville, and Brad Cieleski of Slippery Rock round out the field.    157: The 157-pound weight class returns three former placewinners.  Lock Haven's Jason Gilligan has the highest finish of the trio, placing third last year.  Millersville's Jesse Reed took home fourth at 149 in 2000, while East Stroudsburg's Matt Dudeck who was sixth at 157 in 2001.  Other contenders include Bloomsburg's B.J. Mikeska, Clarion's Jeremy Reitz, Edinboro's Ryan Yates, Kutztown's Chris Jacobs, Shippensburg's Andy Martin, and Slippery Rock's Dustin Flack.    165: Edinboro's Matt R. King is ranked 15th in the latest poll and could very likely be a favorite to reach the championship finals. Millersville's Craig Pequignot is the lone returning placewinner here, taking home a fifth-place medal at 174.  Also looking to earn some team points and bring home a medal are Bloomsburg's Duane Bastress, Clarion's Jamie Durkin, East Stroudsburg's Brandon Mihalko, Kutztown's Anthony Corpora, Lock Haven's Charlie Brenneman, Shippensburg's Luke Cummings, and Slippery Rock's John Hawn.    174: Edinboro's Josh Koscheck will return for his shot at his fourth-straight PSAC Crown.  Koscheck won his previous titles in 1999, 2000 and 2001, garnering Outstanding Wrestler honors in 1999 and 2001. He is a returning NCAA Division I Champion and is ranked #1 in the latest poll.  Battling for a trip to the finals will be Lock Haven's Ed Pawlak, who was third at 174 in 2001, and East Stroudsburg's Dan Roy, who was fifth last season.  Other contenders are Bloomsburg's Josh Hewes, Clarion's Todd Schuchert, Kutztown's Nick Brumbaugh, Millersville's Curtis Yeager, Shippensburg's Aaron Telatovich, and Slippery Rock's Randy Cimino.    184: Twentieth-ranked Josh Millard of Lock Haven is the favorite at 184.  Millard finished third in 2001 and fourth in 2000 at 184. Slippery Rock's John Opfar and Millersville's Adam Schaaf were both sixth in 2000 at 174 and 184, respectively.  Also challenging for gold are Bloomsburg's Justin Johnson, Clarion's Marcus Surin, East Stroudsburg's Shawn Smith, Edinboro's Matt Camino, Kutztown's Nick Murn, and Shippensburg's Nick Hensley.       197: Lock Haven's Avery Zerkle and Edinboro's David Shunamon, the finalists from last year's championship bout, both return at 197. In 2001, an unranked Zerkle won in a 5-4 tiebreaker over then 10th-ranked Shunamon.  Shunamon is ranked eighth in the latest poll, while Zerkle is unranked again.  Zerkle also placed fourth in 2000. Clarion's Eric Mausser is also in the mix, placing fourth last year. Millersville's Greg Eynon is a contender.  He placed sixth in 2001 and had a career-high fourth-place finish in 1999.  Also competing are Bloomsburg's Andy Ludlow, East Stroudsburg's Andy Sheaffer, Kutztown's CC Ezell, Shippensburg's Jared Dubbs, and Slippery Rock's Corey Hart.    28
