An exciting international sports event, the Little Caesars "Save USC Wrestling" Showdown, will be held at the Univ. of Southern Colorado Massari Arena on Wednesday, Feb. 6, starting at 7:30 p.m. An all-star team from the United States will battle the national team from Belarus in a freestyle wrestling dual meet. Many top international wrestling stars from both nations will compete in this event, featuring the Olympic sport of freestyle wrestling. Proceeds from this event will support the USC ThunderWolf Wrestling Club and will also assist in the effort to reinstate the varsity wrestling program that was eliminated last year at USC. Assisting with the promotion of this exciting event will be members of the "Community in Support of USC Wrestling," a local grass-roots community group of USC graduates and students, local community leaders and wrestling leaders. The organization was formed last May to seek the reinstatement of the Univ. of Southern Colorado wrestling program. In addition, USA Wrestling, the national governing body for amateur wrestling, which is based in Colorado Springs, will also provide support for this fundraising sports competition. The U.S. team will feature a number of top stars, including a number of U.S. Olympic Training Center resident athletes that live in Colorado Springs. In addition, local star Jason Tapia, a USC ThunderWolf Wrestling Club member and a two-time NCAA Div. II All-American, is scheduled to compete on the U.S. team. Belarus is one of the top international freestyle wrestling nations in the world, placing 11th at the 2001 World Championships. The team is led by 2001 World Champion Herman Kontoev at 119 pounds. Complete USA and Belarus lineups will be announced when available. "We are excited about the opportunity to host some of the best wrestlers in the world, right here at USC," said USC wrestling coach Doug Moses. "This event is being held to raise funds in our effort to save USC wrestling and bring back a varsity program next year. Everybody in Colorado who supports and enjoys wrestling should attend this exciting dual meet." World Dual meets are among the most popular events hosted by USA Wrestling. The USA faces a top international team in a dual meet format. This event provides fans an opportunity to cheer for Team USA and witness top international Olympic wrestling. A special youth wrestling clinic, featuring the USA Wrestling National Coaching Staff, will be held prior to the dual meet at 6:30 p.m. All ticketholders will be permitted to attend the wrestling clinic for free. Tickets will cost $8 for adults and $5 for students, if purchased in advance. Tickets sold at the door will cost $10 for adults and $7 for students. Any individuals who can not attend the event but wishes to support the USC wrestling program will be encouraged to purchase a ticket as a donation to the club. On May 16 last year, former USC President Tito Guerrero III announced that USC had dropped its very successful Div. II wrestling program. A community effort was developed to seek the reinstatement of the program. Interim USC President Robert Glennen announced on July 12 that the wrestling program will not be reinstated at USC. Popular coach Doug Moses was retained as an employee of the USC Athletic Department, and created a club program. The club has participated in a number of events this year, and is scheduled to participate in the NCWA National Championships (for club programs) at Lafayette College in Pennsylvania, March 15-16. USC is currently ranked No. 7 nationally among NWCA club programs. In the 18 years of the varsity program under Coach Moses, USC has claimed 11 individual national titles and 65 All-American honors. The university hosted the NCAA Div II National Wrestling Championships two times.
