Penn Wrestling Announces Class of 2006

The University of Pennsylvania wrestling program is pleased to announce the early recruiting class of eight student-athletes for the class of 2006. Head Coach Roger Reina, has once again landed a stellar crop of student-athletes that will keep Penn at the top of the national rankings for the years to come. "We are very confident in our early recruits for this year, and feel they will add tremendous excitement and talent to our mission of elevating Penn wrestling to the next level," said Head Coach Roger Reina, in his 16th year at the helm of Penn's program. Headlining the talented Quaker recruiting class is Junior National Greco-Roman Champion and Freestyle runner-up, Matt Herrington of Cambridge, NY. A New York State Champion and three-time state place finisher for LaSalle Institute, Herrington is currently the top ranked wrestler at 171 lbs. in the country according to Wrestling USA Magazine and was tabbed as one of the nation's top ten recruits for 2002. Herrington, who entered his senior season with a 195 career wins recently won the prestigious Beast of the East Tournament. Herrington will be the fourth future Quaker in three years having won a Junior National title. He is projected to wrestle at 174 lbs. for Penn. The Quakers landed another national-caliber standout in New Jersey State Champion Matt Valenti from Kittatinny High School in Newton, NJ. Valenti had a very successful junior season going undefeated to capture his first state title after finishing fourth in the state as a freshman and sophomore. Valenti has also been very successful on the freestyle circuit by finishing fifth at the Cadet and Junior National Freestyle Championships. He is currently ranked sixth in the nation by Wrestling USA and he looks to compete in college at a 125 lbs. Christian Franco of Whitehall, PA is the third future Quaker to be ranked in the top-10 by Wrestling USA Magazine. The two-time PIAA state place finisher for Whitehall High School is currently ranked fourth in the country at 140 lbs. and first in the state of Pennsylvania. Franco has finished third and second in the state and currently has a career record of 131-10 midway through his senior season. Franco is projected to wrestle for the Quakers at either 149 lbs. or 157 lbs. Two-time defending Maryland State Champion and one time runner-up, Matt Eveleth of Chesapeake High School in Severna Park, MD will become the third Eveleth brother to don a Quaker uniform. Currently ranked 15th in the nation at 125 lbs., Eveleth is the brother of Brian Eveleth (C'96) and current Sophomore Jeff Eveleth. The Pennsylvania Power Wrestling Intensive Camp graduate is in search of his third state title and is currently ranked first in the state. The Maryland Junior National Freestyle Team Member is projected to compete at 133 lbs. for the Quakers. Matt Benz of Harriton High School in Penn Valley, PA will also come to Penn with some strong family ties. Benz is the son of former Penn wrestler Dr. Bob Benz (C'74) and brother of current Quaker freshman Greg Benz. Benz was a regional qualifier in 2001 and is a graduate of the Pennsylvania Power Wrestling Intensive Camp. Benz will look to compete at 125 lbs. or 133 lbs. next season. Geoff Miller of McDonough High School is a Maryland State Prep Champion and National Prep All-American. The Mount Airy, MD native is a three-time state place finisher and is currently the number ranked wrestler in all division in the state of Maryland at 171 lbs. The former Cadet National All-American will project to wrestle 165 or 174lbs for Penn. Jeff Steinke will join the Quakers from Dover-Foxcroft, Maine where he is a three-time state runner-up for Foxcroft Academy. Steinke will wrestle his college career at 184 or 197lbs. Rounding out the Quakers early recruiting class is Michael Corigliano of Chaminade High School in Glen Cove, NY. He is currently ranked fourth in New York Catholic state rankings and was his school's top student athlete award winner. This recruiting class will join a Penn squad that is currently ranked eighth in the country and first in the EIWA. The team returns six starters for 2002-03.
