First day of 2002 National Duals competition closes; finals set for tomorrow at 3pm PT

COLUMBUS, OH - A long day of dueling is complete is at the 2002 National Wrestling Coaches Association National Wrestling Duals held on the campus of Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio.    This year marks the first time that a national dual championship for three divisions of college wrestling are being held simultaneously. Top schools from Division I, II, and III are on hand to battle for the championships.    The host team shocked fans in the semifinal round competition tonight against the No. 3 ranked Oklahoma Sooners. In a tight dual, the Sooners led the Ohio State Buckeyes 17-13 heading into the final match, which pitted No. 2 Tommy Rowlands of Ohio State against No. 3 Leonce Crump of Oklahoma. The final match was a battle ending with and overtime pin by Rowlands to win the match and the dual, 19-17.    Second ranked Oklahoma had a rough day dropping a second round loss to the Buckeyes, 19,13 and then again in the consolation quarters to Iowa State, 25-20. After giving up forfeits in the first two matches, Iowa State bounced back with wins at 141, 149, 165, 197 and 285, along with six points at 174 when the Cowboys Ty Wilcox was disqualified for unsportsmanlike conduct. The Cowboys also lost one team point for the violation.    The top team in the nation, Minnesota breezed through dual competition today, handing losses to Northern Iowa 27-12, Penn 25-6, and Michigan 26-6. They will meet up in the finals tomorrow with No. 7 Ohio State Buckeyes, who earned their finals position with wins over Lock Haven 37-3, Oklahoma State 19-13, and Oklahoma 19-17.    Consolation semifinal matches will be held tomorrow between the No. 6 ranked Iowa State Cyclones and No. 4 ranked Michigan Wolverines, and the Oklahoma Sooners and No. 5 ranked Iowa Hawkeyes. The winners of those duals will wrestle for 3rd place at 3 p.m. PT tomorrow. No. 1 ranked North Dakota State easily made its way to finals with dual wins over Carson-Newman 37-6, Findlay 34-3, and No 4 ranked Nebraska-Omaha 22-13.    NDSU will battle for the championship with No 2 ranked Central Oklahoma, who secured a finals position with wins over American International 43-6, Central Missouri 31-12, and No.3 ranked Ashland 18-14.    In consolation semifinals action tomorrow, the No. 4 Nebraska-Omaha Mavericks will take on unranked Augustana, while No. 3 ranked Ashland battles unranked Findlay University. The winners of those duals will then challenge for 3rd place tomorrow afternoon. Tomorrows championship final will set No. 1 Augsburg against No. 2 Wartburg. Augusburg kept its opponents in single digit scoring today, making its way to the finals with dual wins over Thiel College 47-3, Buena Vista 31-7, and  Kings College 36-6.    No. 2 Wartburg secured its position in finals competition with dual wins over Montclaire State 27-18, Upper Iowa 27-6, and Wisconsin-Lacrosse 25-15.    Consolation semifinal competition tomorrow morning pitts No. 7 ranked Upper Iowa against No. 4 ranked Kings College, while No. 3 ranked Wisconsin-Lacrosse will face unranked Springfield College. The winners of those duals will battle for 3rd place tomorrow afternoon. Matches for 7th place will be held at 11 a.m. for all divisions followed by 5th place matches for all divisions at 1 p.m. and the championship finals at 3 p.m. The 5th, 3rd, and championship rounds will be held in the main St. Johns Arena.
