World and Olympic Champion Wrestlers and Medalists to Compete in the 2002 Dave Schultz Memorial Inte

World and Olympic champion wrestlers and medalists expected to compete at the Dave Schultz Memorial International Wrestling Tournament at the U.S. Olympic Complex in Colorado Springs, Colo., Feb. 9-10     A number of World and Olympic champion wrestlers and medalists are in the preliminary field for the fourth annual Dave Schultz Memorial International Tournament, February 9-10 in Colorado Springs, Colo.      The wrestling tournament will feature top athletes in men's freestyle, men's Greco-Roman and women's freestyle wrestling on the Senior levels. The competition will be hosted in Sports Center 1 at the U.S. Olympic Complex.     There is a new prize money system in place for the Dave Schultz Memorial International Tournament for the men's divisions. In recognition of superior performance and achievement, USA Wrestling is awarding the following money for men's freestyle and Greco-Roman. The weight class champion will receive $1,500, or the highest U.S. place finisher will receive $1,250. The second place U.S. athlete will receive $1,000 and the third place U.S. athlete will receive $500.      As of Jan. 1, 2002 FILA changed the weight classes for all three styles of wrestling. The new weight classes will be used at this tournament. The new weight divisions are as follows:     Men's freestyle and Greco-Roman: 55 kg, 60 kg, 66 kg, 74 kg, 84 kg, 96 kg and 120 kg.     Women: 48 kg, 51 kg, 55 kg, 59 kg, 63 kg, 67 kg and 72 kg.     Among the teams expected to enter in men's freestyle are: the United States, Belarus, Bulgaria, Canada, France, Great Britain, Japan and Uzbekistan.      In Greco-Roman: the United States, Belarus, Bulgaria, Canada, Great Britain, Japan and Uzbekistan.     In women's freestyle: the United States, Canada and Bulgaria.      All weight classes mentioned in the rest of the article are the old weight classes.      Star athletes from the preliminary rosters include:       Men's freestyle field       2001 World silver medalist Brandon Eggum of the United States at 85 kg     1998 World Champion and 2000 Olympic silver medalist Sammie Henson of the United States at 54 kg     2001 World bronze medalist Joe Williams of the United States at 76 kg     2001 World Champion and 2001 International Wrestler of the Year Nikolai Paslar of Bulgaria at 69 kg     2001 World Champion and 2000 Olympic silver medalist Serafim Barzakov of Bulgaria at 63 kg       1999 World bronze medalist Damir Zakhratdinov of Uzbekistan at 58 kg     2001 World silver medalist and 2000 Olympic silver medalist Arthur Taymazov of Uzbekistan at 130 kg      2001 World Champion Herman Kontoev of Belarus at 54 kg     Greco-Roman field     2000 Olympians and 2001 World Team members Jim Gruenwald and Kevin Bracken of the United States at 58 kg and 63 kg respectively      2001 World Team members Marcel Cooper and Keith Sieracki of the United States at 69 kg and 76 kg respectively      2001 World champion Dilshod Aripov of Uzbekistan at 58 kg     Women's freestyle field      2001 World silver medalist and 2001 International Wrestler of the Year Toccara Montgomery of the United States at 68 kg     2001 World silver medalist Stephanie Murata of the United States at 51 kg      2001 World Team members Sara McMann, Jenna Pavlik and Erin Tomeo of the United States at 62 kg, 75 kg and 56 kg respectively.     As the competition is an open tournament, and athletes do not have to pre-register to compete, the exact U.S. wrestlers who will participate can not be completely determined at this time.      In men's freestyle for the United States, five members of the 2001 World team are slated to compete. 2001 World silver medalist Brandon Eggum (Minneapolis, Minn./Minnesota Storm) at 85 kg, 2001 World bronze medalist Joe Williams (Iowa City, Iowa/Sunkist Kids) at 76 kg, along with 2001 World Team members Eric Guerrero (Stillwater, Okla./Cowboy WC) at 58 kg, Bill Zadick (Iowa City, Iowa/Hawkeye WC) at 63 kg and Chris Bono (Gilbert, Iowa/Sunkist Kids) at 69 kg.     Numerous members of freestyle Team USA are also expected to compete. These include: Eric Akin (Overland Park, Kan./Dave Schultz WC) at 54 kg, Kerry Boumans (Colorado Springs, Colo./Dave Schultz WC) at 58 kg, John Fisher (Ypsilanti, Mich.,/Sunkist Kids) at 63 kg, Chad Lamer (Iowa City, Iowa/Hawkeye WC) at 97 kg, Mike Mena (Bloomington, Ind./NYAC) at 54 kg, Aaron Simpson (Tempe, Ariz./Sunkist Kids) at 85 kg, Byron Tucker (Norman, Okla./Team Excel) at 76 kg and Tolly Thompson (Lincoln, Neb./Sunkist Kids) at 130 kg. Also listed to compete is 2000 Olympian Charles Burton (Bloomington, Ind./NYAC) at 85 kg.     Returning 2001 Dave Schultz champions for the United States in men's freestyle include Daniel Cormier (Stillwater, Okla./Gator WC) who won the 97 kg weight class last year and U.S. Olympic Training Center resident athlete Ramico Blackmon (Colorado Springs, Colo./Team Excel) who won at 69 kg. Blackmon was also named the Outstanding Wrestler of the 2001 freestyle tournament.     In Greco-Roman, most of the Olympic Training Center resident athletes will be competing, but a final list has not been determined. Many of those athletes make up Team USA. Those include: 2000 Olympians and 2001 World team members Jim Gruenwald (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) at 58 kg and Kevin Bracken (Colorado Springs, Colo./NYAC) at 63 kg. 2001 World team members Marcel Cooper (Triangle, Va./U.S. Marine Corps) and Keith Sieracki (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army) are also expected to compete at 69 kg and 76 kg respectively. Sieracki is a returning 2001 Dave Schultz champion.      Others Greco-Roman athletes slated to attend include Team USA members Dremiel Byers (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army) at 130 kg, T.C. Dantzler (Colorado Springs, Colo./NYAC) at 76 kg, Jason Loukides (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army) at 97 kg and Dan Niebuhr (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) at 76 kg.       In women's freestyle, 2001 World silver medalist and 2001 International Wrestler of the Year Toccara Montgomery (Cleveland, Ohio/Sunkist Kids) is expected at 68 kg. 2001 World silver medalist Stephanie Murata (E. Lansing, Mich./Sunkist Kids) at 51 kg is on the list of competitors.       Other 2001 World team members expected to compete include Sara McMann (Lock Haven, Pa./Sunkist Kids) at 62 kg, Jenna Pavlik (Lock Haven, Pa.) at 75 kg and Erin Tomeo (Volant, Pa./TAPS) at 56 kg. Pavlik finished fifth at the 2001 World Championships while McMann was a U.S. Nationals champion in 2000 and 2001. Team USA member Jenny Wong (Lock Haven, Pa./Sunkist Kids) is also expected to compete at 51 kg.     USA Wrestling and the Dave Schultz Wrestling Foundation have worked together to create the Dave Schultz Memorial International. The event honors the memory and achievements of Olympic Champion Dave Schultz, who was tragically killed in 1996.     The Colorado Springs Sports Corporation will support the competition by assisting in the promotion and coordination of the event. Adelphia Cable plans to televise the finals to the Colorado Springs community on Feb. 12 and 13 at 7:00 p.m. on Channel 6.     Men's freestyle and Greco-Roman preliminaries and consolations competition will begin Saturday, Feb. 9 at 9:00 a.m. Women's freestyle preliminaries and consolations will begin Saturday at 6:30 p.m. and the men will continue at 7:00 p.m. All three styles will continue Sunday, February 10 at 9:00 a.m. with preliminaries and consolations. Third place matches for all styles will be at 2:00 p.m. with the finals starting at 6:30 (The schedule is subject to change based upon entries).     Tickets are available at the door. There is an all-session ticket for $15 which includes both Saturday and Sunday. An adult ticket for Saturday and Sunday is $8 each or $4 per day. Adult tickets for medal and final matches only are $6. High School students with an I.D. are $5 per day and below high-school youth are $2 per day. Coaches are free with five paid wrestlers.
