The National Wrestling Coaches Association is pleased to announce that a spectacular lineup of Division I wrestlers have accepted invitations to compete at the 2002 All-Star Classic. The 36th Annual All-Star Classic will take place at Hofstra Arena on the campus of Hofstra University in Hempstead, New York on January 28 at 7:00pm. The All-Star Classic pits the nation's top collegiate wrestlers against each other in challenge matches often for the number one ranking in the country. This meet is often seen as a preview of the upcoming NCAA finals. At the 2001 All-Star Classic, held at Franklin and Marshall College, five participants later went onto capture NCAA titles in March. This year's lineup will feature two past NCAA Champions and four current number one ranked wrestlers. Two of the feature matches will be between the No. 1 and No. 2 ranked wrestlers in the most recent Amateur Wrestling News individual rankings (149 and 197) and one match will be a repeat of last year's NCAA finals at HWT. The lineup is subject to change due to injury or other challenges. Headlining the participants is three-time NCAA Champion Cael Sanderson of Iowa State University. Sanderson, who currently sports a 139-0 career record, is making his fourth consecutive appearance in the event. He will meet number two-ranked Jon Trenge of Lehigh. These two met earlier in the season at the Midlands Championship semifinals where Sanderson was victorious 16-5. John Lockhart of Illinois is the second 2001 NCAA Champion that will be competing at Hofstra. He will be wrestling #2 ranked Tommy Rowlands of Ohio State University. This will be a repeat of last year's NCAA Finals that Lockhart won in the tiebreaker. The two additional number one ranked wrestlers competing in the event include: Mike Zadick of Iowa at 149lbs, Victor Sveda of Indiana at 184lbs. Zadick will meet Jamarr Billman of Lock Haven in the other one versus two match. "On behalf of the NWCA Board of Directors, I would like to thank the athletes and coaches for competing in this signature event, we truly could not make these events a success without their support" stated Mike Moyer, Executive Director of the National Wrestling Coaches Association "We also greatly appreciate the relentless efforts of Hofstra University to ensure a memorable event for all those who attend." Included in the lineup will be two local matches that will feature Hofstra University wrestlers. At 149lbs, Jason DeBruin will meet Jeremy Spates of Missouri while Chris Skretkowicz will meet Anthony Reynolds of Sacred Heart at 197lbs. Tickets can be purchased for the NWCA All-Star Classic by calling the Hofstra Arena Box Office at (516) 463-6633 extension 1. 2002 All-Star Classic Lineup January 28, 2002 Hofstra University 125 - #3 Matt Ridings (Oklahoma) vs. #5 Ben Vombaur (Boise State) 133 - #2 Johnny Thompson (Oklahoma State) vs.#3 Witt Durden (Oklahoma) 141 - #4 Mark Conley (Navy) vs. #3 Sean Gray (Virginia Tech) 149 - #1 Mike Zadick (Iowa) vs. #2 Jamarr Billman (Lock Haven) 157 - #2 Yoshi Nakamura (Penn) vs. #4 Shane Roller (Oklahoma State) 165 - #2 Matt Lackey (Illinois) vs. #3 Tyrone Lewis (Oklahoma State) 174 - #2 Otto Olson (Michigan) vs. #3 Rick Springman (Penn) 184 - #1 Victor Sveda (Indiana) vs. #4 Andy Hrovat (Michigan) 197 - #1 Cael Sanderson (Iowa State) vs. #2 Jon Trenge (Lehigh) Hwt - #2 Tommy Rowlands (Ohio State) vs. #3 John Lockhart (Illinois) 149 - #14 Jason DeBruin (Hofstra) vs. #11 Jeremy Spates (Missouri) 197 - #9 Chris Skretkowicz (Hofstra) vs. #16 Anthony Reynolds (Sacred Heart) Note: Rankings are Amateur Wrestling News as of January 15 Coaches: Mark Johnson (Illinois), Joe McFarland (Michigan), Mark Ostrander (Iowa Central) and Mike Ritchie (Southern Oregon)
