Hofstra Sweeps CAA Wrestler/Rookie of Week Awards; Rookies Masa, C. Skretkowicz Honored

LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ--Freshman Jon Masa of Hofstra University has been named the Colonial Athletic Association Wrestler of the Week, and freshman Chris Skretkowicz of Hofstra has been named the CAA Wrestler of the Week, for all competition January 7-13. The Pride grapplers led Hofstra to a second place finish at the prestigious Virginia Duals, ahead of such powerhouses as 18th ranked Wisconsin, 20th ranked Pittsburgh and 23rd ranked Penn State. Masa (Long Beach, NY/Long Beach) won all four of his bouts at the Virginia Duals, including a major decision and a victory over 13th ranked J. P. Reese of Missouri. The 141 pounder improved to 8-3 in duals, 13-5 overall, and moved up to a national ranking of 17th by Amateur Wrestling News. Skretowicz (Hamburg, NJ/Wallkill Valley Regional) won all four of his bouts at the Virginia Duals, including a victory over fifth ranked Scott Barker of Missouri. Skretkowicz won by pin over CAA-rival Greg Sawyer of Rider, and also won a major decision, and moves up in the national rankings to ninth by both InterMat and AWN. The 197-pound Skretkowicz improved to 14-5 overall, 7-4 in duals, and is part of a brother tandem, with 184-pound brother Jason. The two combine for a 25-14 record, 11-9 in duals.
