The Oregon Ducks traveled to Lincoln Nebraska to dual a Husker team recovering from injury and disappointment. The Huskers were slated to compete at the Midlands Championships but citing the need for rest and recovery Head Coach Mark Manning kept his squad from traveling to Illinois. The Big Red's last competition was December 15th when they were upset by Brian Smith's Missouri squad, giving the Tigers its first Big 12 Conference dual victory. It was an ominous beginning for the Huskers when Scott Burnett with a 7-5 record moved up to 149 pounds to face off against Casey Hunt a junior from Pendleton, Oregon. After an initial shot by Burnett that was forced out of bounds, Hunt responded by nailing his opponent with a concrete roll from a front headlock. Hunt secured the fall barely a minute into the match grabbing an early 6-0 lead for the Ducks. Bryan Snyder continued his season long dominance when he opposed Michael Badicke a sophomore from Beaverton Oregon. Snyder, an Easton Pennsylvania native, made short work of his opponent by grabbing a 10-3 lead in the first period en route to 19-4 technical fall with match cancellation time of 4:10. Snyder, last season's national runner-up to TJ Williams of Iowa, seems ready to make a run at the championship at 157 pounds. At 165 pounds #6 rated Eugene Harris of Oregon faced Nebraska senior Tony Denke a Longvalley South Dakota native. Harris showed his dominance on his feet by striking with a foot prop off of double underhooks followed by a three point nearfall. Harris secured the fall after taking down Denke with a bodylock at 2:38 giving the Ducks a 12-5 lead. The 174 pound weight class was an important battle of freshman featuring Shane Webster of Sams Valley Oregon against Jason Zakaras who wrestled for Omaha Westside. Zakaras scored an important first period takedown with 40 seconds left in the period and held the lead going into the second period 2-0. In the second period Fisher chose the down position, battling out of a leg ride Fisher secured a two-point reversal. The Oregon wrestler turned Zakaras using a three quarter nelson, securing the fall at 2:52. The Ducks stretched their lead to 18-5. Another of the Huskers four ranked wrestlers took the mat at 184 pounds looking to get the team back into the match. Travis Pascoe who wrestled for Gonzaga Prep holds the #7 ranking nationally. His opponent was Elias Soto a freshman from Eugene Oregon. Pascoe got rolling early scoring five takedowns in the first period, grabbing a 10-4 lead at the end of the first. Pascoe earned the technical fall at 5:28 winning 21-6. Justin Ruiz from Murray Utah took the mat against unranked Jake Leair a sophomore from Grants Pass Oregon. Ruiz ran his record to 15-3 by earning a 16-1 technical fall at 4:09. Ruiz holds the #7 ranking and appears to be regaining his wrestling form after taking a leave from college on a church mission. The Huskers pulled within three with Ducks leading 18-15. At heavyweight Pat Miron of Nebraska and #15 ranked Eric Webb squared off. In a tight match that went back and forth between the heavyweights, Miron eked out a 6-5 victory. Late in the match Webb appeared to have both legs in for the match winning takedown in front of the Husker bench. The referee blew the wrestlers out of bounds and the Huskers tied the meet score 18-18 with the upset. A highly anticipated bout at 125 pounds did not materialize as Jason Powell the #2 seed nationally received a forfeit. Shaun Williams the #8 rated wrestler did not wrestle and the Huskers led 24-18 with two matches left. At 133 pounds, Martin Mitchell of Oregon faced Joey Malia for the Huskers. In a wild match characterized by long scrambles Mitchell grabbed a 10-8 lead at the end of the first period. Mitchell brought the Ducks back within three points by taking a 18-11 win back to Oregon. The Ducks needed a win at 141 pounds to tie the team score when Brian Watson a junior from Canby Oregon faced Dusty Spaulding a sophomore from Council Grove Kansas. Spaulding held a 2-1 lead at the end of the first period, but Watson gained the advantage 4-2 at the end of the second. Spaulding chose neutral to start the third period but with :55 seconds left in the bout Watson added the definitive takedown to earn a 6-2 victory. The final win secured a 24-24 tie between the two teams. With three falls for the Ducks to none for the Huskers, the Pac 10 team came away with the dual victory on the second criteria.
