USA Wrestling has named the winners of the 2001 Championship Belt Series on the age-group levels. This exciting system honors America's best wrestlers in each of the USA Wrestling's four age-groups for their accomplishments during the year. The top point scorer in the series on the Cadet, Junior, FILA Junior World, University and Senior levels receives a handsome plaque. Athletes only receive points on the specific age level where they compete. Points can not transfer from one age level to another age level. USA Wrestling will announce all eight 2001 Championship Belt Series winners, with one champion announced per day, from Christmas Eve through New Years Eve. Cadet champion - Eric Tannenbaum, Naperville, Ill. Eric Tannenbaum of Naperville, Ill. won the Cadet level Championship Belt Series with 245 points, 10 points ahead of runner-up Patrick Barrentine of West Carrollton, Ohio. Cadet wrestlers are 15- and 16-year-old athletes. Tannenbaum won the AdvoCare Cadet National Championships in both freestyle and Greco-Roman at 132 pounds, and was named Outstanding Wrestler in Greco-Roman. He also placed third at the FILA Cadet Nationals in freestyle and fourth in Greco-Roman. Tannenbaum was a double champion, winning both styles, at the Northern Plains Cadet Regionals. This year, he is a junior at Naperville North High School. Barrentine was an AdvoCare Cadet Nationals champion in Greco-Roman, and placed third in freestyle at 242 pounds. He won the FILA Cadet Nationals in Greco-Roman and placed fourth in freestyle. He also won both styles at the Central Cadet Regionals. This year, he is a junior at Dayton Carroll High School. The Belt Series is based upon a point system, rewarding athletes for actual success in competition. Athletes who place in the major USA Wrestling events on the regional, national and international levels scored points in the series. Each event is weighed according to importance and difficulty, in order to determine the most successful wrestler during the season. A wrestler also receives points for receiving the Most Outstanding Wrestler award and Most Falls award at the events. On the age group levels, points scored in both freestyle and Greco-Roman are combined for the final standings. The Belt Series was created in 1990 to recognize America's most successful age-group athletes. Among the past age-group Belt Series winners are 2000 Olympic Champion Brandon Slay, 1999 World Champion Stephen Neal, 1998 World Champion and 2000 Olympic silver medalist Sammie Henson, 2000 Olympic silver medalist Matt Lindland and 1996 Olympic silver medalist Brandon Paulson. Seven former age-group Championship Belt winners claimed NCAA Div. I individual titles, as well. 2001 Championship Belt Series Standings Cadet Belt Series Top Ten 1.
