EVANSTON, IL - A packed house watched Sunday evening as 10 champions were crowned at the 39th annual Midland Wrestling Championships held this weekend at Welsh Ryan Arena on the campus of Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill. In the record books of the Midlands tournament history is Joe Williams of the Sunkist Kids Wrestling Club who tied the record for the most consecutive championships title, as well as the record for the most placings in the tournament. Williams won his eighth straight Midlands tournament with a 6-3 decision over second seeded Rick Springman of Pennsylvania. Williams is now tied with Bruce Baumgartner for the most consecutive Midlands championships. Baumgartner set the record in 1987 with eight straight wins. Williams also tied John Fisher's record by placing in nine consecutive Midlands tournaments; he placed 5th in his first Midlands tournament back in 1993 wrestling for the University of Iowa. The three wrestlers who were in the running to become members of the 20 in 4 Club have made their marks. The 20 in 4 Club is an honor given to wrestlers who have reached a total of 20 wins in their first four years of competition at the Midlands. Those entering the Club this year include Cael Sanderson of Iowa State, Yoshi Nakamura from Penn, Mitch Clark from the Ohio International Wrestling Club. Nakamura entered the Club last night with a quarterfinal win over Josh Jansen of Ohio State, as did Mitch Clark with a quarterfinal win over Jason Cooley or Oregon State in the quarters. Sanderson earned his spot in the Club today with a semifinal win over Jon Trenge of Lehigh. Sanderson is now the the second wrestler in the history of the tournament to enter the Club undefeated. The only other wrestler to reach such a milestone was Dan Gable. Three other wrestlers who also would have entered the 20 in 4 Club were Pat McNamara of Michigan State, and Roman Fleazar and Eric Schmiesing of of Hofstra. However, none of these wrestlers compete in this year's event. Sanderson's win tonight over Lee Fullart of the Excel Wrestling Club not only enters him in the 20 in 4 Club with a 21-0 Midlands record, but also brings his undefeated college record to 136-0. The major upset of the final round came at 133-pounds, where 10th seeded Cliff Moore of Iowa won a 1-1 sudden victory overtime decision over the number one seeded wrestler, Matt Azevedo of the Cyclone Wrestling Club. Former World Champion from Cuba, Alexis Vila, wresting unattached also claimed the top prize with a 6-5 decision over #1 seeded Leroy Vega of Minnesota.
