Major upset in college wrestling today. The lowly Missouri Tigers came from out of nowhere to stun the perennial national contenders Oklahoma State Cowboys. The team title was not decided until the final match with Dave Hummel of Oklahoma State and Kevin Herron of Missouri for third and Fourth place. James Huml would have had to win the match by a pin to secure the win for the Cowboys. Huml beat Herron 7-1 but could not put him on his back to seal the deal. Oklahoma State tripped them selves up several times during the day. Tyrone Lewis, almost a certain to win his weight class, did not wrestle due to an injury. Then Oklahoma State lost at 125 pounds with Skyler Holman losing to Boise State's Ben Vonbaur 3-1. Then the ever-powerful Johnny Thompson from Oklahoma State came out against David Douglas from Arizona State. The match did not have a lot of movement nor a lot of points but Douglas pulled it out over Thompson with a 3-2 victory. Missouri took control in the finals by winning at the 197-pound class with a fall from Missouri's Scott Barker over Arizona State's Eric Gladdish. That match won the tournament Team Scores: 1.
