The first day of the NYAC Holiday Tournament had a lot to offer fans of wrestling. Not only did the first day set the stage for some great match ups for day two, but there were many matches that provided more excitement than one would usually expect on the first day of a two day tournament. The field of competitors was as strong as anticipated. There were athletes competing in Men's Freestyle and Greco-Roman and Women's Freestyle. The athletes came from all over the US as well as Belarus, Canada and even a woman from Australia. The amount of skill possessed by the athletes was a greater indicator of the strength of the field of competition. Many current World and National team members are competing. Also the number of NCAA Champions and All-Americans has to rival any of the other tournaments during the international season. For example at 69 kg there is Chris Bono, World team member and NCAA Champion; Adam Tirapelle, NCAA Champion; John Hughes, NCAA Champion; Casey Cunningham, NCAA Champion; and TJ Williams 2x NCAA Champion. Unlike most international tournaments, the NYAC Holiday usually uses the old double elimination pool system of pairing. This gives athletes the chance to get more matches. Because of this we will get to see some matches that would not have taken place using the current pool system. This will make day two even more exciting than the first.
