Opfer of Kent State named MAC Wrestler of the Week

Jared Opfer, Kent State (125lb., So., Sandusky, Ohio) went 3-0 at the Kent State Duals, winning all three matches by first-period falls. Opfer pinned Steven Wilson of Baldwin-Wallace in 2:13, Jon Pecori of Mercyhurst in 2:16 and Matthew Pelligrino of American in 37 seconds. Opfer now has a 15-2 record with five falls. Kent State is now 6-0 on the season after sweeping the Duals.    Other Nominees  Garrett Bontempo, Buffalo (184lb., So., DuBois. Pa.) registered seven takedowns, one reversal and one riding time point in a major decision (17-7) over Binghamton's Jeff McAveney. Bontempo leads the team with 15 takedowns through three dual meets. On the 2001-02 season, he has an overall mark of 10-4, having gone 2-1 in dual meets and 1-1 in the MAC. He has five escapes, one reversal, and two riding time points to go with his 15 takedowns.    Derek Phillips, Central Michigan (141lb., Jr., Grosse Pointe, Mich.) beat No.11 ranked Clark Forward of Michigan in a major decision, 12-4 to be one of the two Chippewas to win matches against the Wolverines. Phillips is now 12-1 this season with one fall.    Darnell Ruffin, Eastern Michigan (141lb., Sr., Flint, Mich.)won three matches in his first action of the year after being hampered by injuries.    Jeremiah Beltran, Ohio (Hwt., Fr., Olathe, Kan.) was one of five Ohio wrestlers to go 2-1 at the Sheridan Duals. He picked up the Bobcats' only pin of the day on Saturday with his win over Vinny D'Agostino of Rider. Now 9-6 on the 2001-02 season, Beltran has won five matches by pins.
