More than 13,000 wrestling fans turned out the Hilton Coliseum in Ames to see in-state rivals Iowa and Iowa State take to the mat. Continuing the 14-year, 28 win streak against the Cyclones, the Iowa Hawkeyes won seven of 10 matches in the 21-16 dual win. The dual started at 157 pounds with Hawkeye Matt Anderson winning a decisive 6-2 decision over ISU's Matt Veach. Anderson scored at the edge of the mat off a single leg and amassed a minute and a half of riding time in the first period. Anderson would score an escape and another takedown in the second period, securing the decision with more than two minutes of riding time. At 165 pounds, returning two-time all-American Joe Heskett (ISU) jumped out to an early lead with a fleeing the mat point against Iowa's Corey Connell, followed by three quick takedowns. Heskett would dominate the match trading two for one takedowns and escapes throughout the first period. In the second period Heskett locked up a nearside cradle and got the fall at 4:18 to put six on the board for the Cyclones. 174-pounder Tyler Nixt (Iowa) would win a decisive 10-4 decision over freshman Cyclone Joe Passolano scoring four takedowns and two escapes. Passolano's points came from two escapes and then scored a quick reversal off the whistle in the beginning of the third period. After a scoreless first period, Hawkeye Jessman Smith controlled the second period riding ISU's Austen Palmer the entire second period. Smith would score the first point of the match from an escape at the start of the third period and then scored a takedown countering a shot by Palmer to secure the 4-1 decision with riding time. Undefeated three-time National Champion Cael Sanderson jumped out to a quick lead with four single leg takedowns before pinning Iowa's Ryan Fulsaas at 1:41. Hawkeye true freshman Steve Mocco would add three more team points to tie the team race at 12-12 with a 9-5 decision over Cyclone Mark Knauer. Mocco scored three takedowns off snapdowns, but each wrestler would give up a stalling point. At the top of the lineup, 125-pound Luke Eustice (Iowa) would win a 8-3 decision over Nebraska transfer Ty Malia to give the Hawkeyes the lead in team points. The 133-pound match got off to a slow start with no scoring in the first period. ISU's Zach Roberson would score first off a quick sit out at the start of the second period to take a 1-0 lead. Hawkeye Marc Juergens tied the match with an escape at the start of the third period then jumped right back in on a shot to score a takedown. Juergens would ride Roberson out the rest of the match to secure riding time in the 4-1 decision. At 141 pounds, ISU's Aaron Holker scored early countering a single leg shot by Iowa's Luke Moffitt. Holker would add another three nearfall points from a cradle and amass two and a half minutes of riding time in the first period. Holker dominated the match winning a decisive 14-0 major decision and tightening the team race 18-16 going into the final match of the dual. With the team race on the line, undefeated Cyclone Billy Maldanado battled undefeated returning all-American Mike Zadick of Iowa. Zadick would score first with a throwby to a far ankle pick at the end of the first period. Zadick extended his lead hitting an inside trip taking Maldanado to his back for another two points. Zadick secured the 10-4 decision with two more takedowns and riding time to win the match and the dual for the Hawkeyes. The Cyclone's next competition will be at the Midlands Wrestling Championships in Evanston, Ill. on Dec. 29, while the Hawkeyes will battle the University of Northern Iowa in Iowa City on Friday night before heading to the Midlands.
