PATRAS, Greece (AP) - Olympic champion Rulon Gardner advanced to the quarterfinals of the Greco-Roman Wrestling World Championships, defeating Ukraine's Georgiy Saldadse on Saturday. Saldadse, a two-time bronze medalist in the worlds, lost a 3-0 decision in the 286-pound category. ``I was not properly prepared,'' he said. ``Wrestling doesn't forgive mistakes like that.'' Gardner, of Afton, Wyo., shocked three-time gold medalist Alexander Karelin at the Sydney Olympics. Karelin hadn't lost since 1985. Also advancing out of their pools were Olympic medalists in the 1871/4-pound competition, including Matt Lindland of the United States, Hamza Yerlikaya of Turkey and Sandor Bardosi of Hungary. Lindland, who won a silver medal in Sydney, rallied from a 2-0 deficit to beat Cotcha Tsirsiashvili of Israel 6-2. In the 1273/4-pound category, two-time Olympic champion Armen Nazaryan of Bulgaria beat Istvan Majoros of Hungary 4-0. Japan's Katsuhiko Nagata, the Olympic silver medalist, defeated Venezuela's Endrix Arteaga 4-1 in the 152-pound division. In Saturday's semifinals, Cuba's Ernesto Pena defeated Turkey's Mehmet Ozal 11-1 in the 2133/4-pound category to advance to the finals, where he will face Russia's Alexandre Bezroutchkine on Saturday night. Bezroutchkine beat Romania's 1995 silver worlds medalist Petru Sudureak 4-1 in their semifinal. Lazaro Rivas, the Cuban silver medalist at Sydney, was upset by the Iranian Hassan Rangraz 6-1 in their 119-pound semifinal. Rangraz faces Brandon Paulson of the United States in the championship match Saturday, when Kim In-sub of South Korea also will meet Vagninak Galustyan of Armenia in the 1383/4-pound final. Sweden's Ara Abrahamian will face Russia's Alexei Mishine for the 1671/2-pound) gold. The championships, which end Sunday, originally were scheduled for New York in September but were postponed and moved after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. Bulgaria held the freestyle events last month.
