PATRAS, Greece (AP) - Olympic champion Rulon Gardner beat Yuriy Yevseychyk of Israel 3-0 Friday in the 286-pound category at the Greco-Roman Wrestling World Championships. It was the first outing here for Gardner, of Afton, Wyo., who shocked three-time gold medalist Alexander Karelin at the Sydney Games. Karelin hadn't lost since 1985. Gardner will wrestle two-time world championships bronze medalist Georgiy Saldadse of Ukraine on Saturday. Elsewhere, Kevin Bracken of the United States defeated Akaki Chachua of Georgia on a 13-2 technical fall at 1383/4 pounds to reach the quarterfinals. Armen Nazarian of Bulgaria, who won Olympic titles in 1996 and 2000, beat former world champion and Olympic silver medalist Alfred Ter-Mertchyan of Germany at 1273/4 pounds. Nazarian was leading 9-7 when Ter-Mertchyan defaulted with a rib injury. The championships were originally scheduled for New York's Madison Square Garden in September, but were rescheduled and moved after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.
