Upsets abound in battle of No. 1 vs. No. 2; Minnesota defeats Oklahoma State 21, 12

A crowd of approximately 5,000 crowded Gallagher-Iba  arena to watch the top ranked Minnesota Gophers battle the second ranked Oklahoma State Cowboys.    The bouts began with an upset at 125 pounds where Ok State's No. 5 ranked Skylar Holman narrowly defeated second ranked Leroy Vega of Minnesota, 6-4. Holman scored the first takedown in the match, and rode Vega nicely throughout the match to secure the decision with a riding time point.    The second upset of the dual followed at 133-pounds with No. 4-ranked Ryan Lewis of Minnesota pinned No. 1-ranked and returning all-American Johnny Thomspon of OSU. Thomspon jumped out the a quick lead with a double-leg takedown and three nearfall points in the first 30 seconds of the match before Lewis fought off his back to stay in the match. Lewis scored a takedown on the edge with four seconds left in the second period, and came on strong in the third period. With nine seconds left in the match, Lewis was able to cradle and pin Thompson giving the Gophers a 6-3 team lead.    At 141 pounds, Minnesota's Chad Erikson added another three team points with a 9-5 decision over Ok State's Ronnie Delk.     Cowboy Jerrod Sanders scored the first takedown in the 141-pound match against Minnesota's Jared Lawrence. Sanders lead most of the match, but Lawrence came on strong in the third period scoring a quick reverse early in the third period to tie the match and rode Sanders out to win the match by a riding time point.    At 157, Minnesota's No. 3 rated Luke Becker had No. 2 rated Shane Roller (OSU) on his back early on in the first period and dominated the match winning a 13-6 decision.    No. 8 rated John Hardy (Minn.) did a good job with head and hand ties against No. 3 rated Tyrone Lewis keeping the match close, but Lewis' early takedown was the difference in the 3-2 decision.    A tough battle was fought at 174 with No. 4 ranked Jacob Volkmann of Minnesota taking on No. 10 ranked Ty Wilcox of OSU. The two traded escape points taking the match into overtime, where Volkmann scored on a double-leg takedown early in the overtime period.    At 184, riding time proved to be the difference with No. 12 ranked Cowboy Pat Popolizio defeating No. 4 ranked Gopher Damion Hahn, 2-1. Heading into the third period Popolizio lead 1-0 with an escape in the second period. He road Hahn throughout the final period securing riding time. Hahn scored an escape with 13 seconds left.    At 197 pounds, unranked Cowboy Willie Gruenwald lead through most of the second period over No. 2 ranked Owen Elzen. Late in the second period, Elzen scored a reversal and three nearfall points to take a 5-3 lead into the third period. Elzen would score another takedown and secured riding time in the 8-4 decision.    In the battle of the big boys, 13th-ranked James Huml (OSU) scored early on a single leg takedown but No. 4 rated Garrett Lowney (Minn) would score two escapes to tie the match 2-2 going into the third period. Huml chose the down position to start the third period and quickly escaped taking the lead, which would be how the match would end.    The Oklahoma State Cowboys will take on the Oklahoma Sooners next Sunday, while the Minnesota Golden Gophers get set to battle Hofstra in Minneapolis on Thursday night.
