2000 Olympic silver medalist Matt Lindland (Oregon City, Ore./Sunkist Kids)and 2000 Olympic champion Rulon Gardner (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) advanced through to the quarter and semi final rounds at 85 kg and 130 kg respectively. Lindland had fairly easy time defeating Evgeniy Erofaylov of Uzbekistan 11-0 in 1:58 in the quarterfinals. Erofaylov was put down at one minute with a passivity call and Lindland took it from there. Lindland then won a 5-2 decision over Alexandre Menshikov of Russia in the semifinals to make it to the gold-medal match. Gardner had an amazing match in the quarterfinals against the "next Russian superstar" Yuri Patrikeev. The crowd favored Patrikeev since Gardner is the one who defeated Kareline in the 2000 Olympic finals. The second period started with a clinch where Gardner had to clinch first. He broke and Patrikeev was awarded the one point. Then at 4:10 Gardner went to throw and landed on his back and Patrikeev was awarded two points. Gardner was down 0-3 and started working on throws. Nothing worked until 5:00 when he threw and pinned Patrikeev. In the semifinals Gardner decisioned Sergej Moreyko of Bulgaria, 3-0. He will face Mihaly Deak-Bardos of Hungary in the gold-medal match. The United States is also in the running for third place as a team. The U.S has never won a World level medal as a team. Jim Gruenwald (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) ended up finishing tenth at 58 kg.
