The U.S. wrestlers went 3-1 in Round 1 of competition at the Dimitrios Tofalos Arena in Patras, Greece. 1996 Olympic silver medalist Brandon Paulson (Golden Valley, Minn./Minnesota Storm) decisioned Vitalie Ceban of Moldova in the first match of his pool 6-1 at 54 kg. Paulson started ahead 1-0 with a gut wrench, then Ceban was awarded a point to tie it off a slip throw that the side judges gave. Paulson then proceeded to get three takedowns in the second period to close out the match. He will face Dariusz Jablonski of Poland in Round 2. 2000 Olympian Kevin Bracken (Colorado Springs, Colo./NYAC) won his first match by a technical fall 11-0 over Chieh Yen Shih of Chinese Taipai, 11-0 in 1:56 at 63 kg. He scored first with a three-point headlock as he was going out of bounds fifty seconds into the match. He then proceeded to take total control of the match, scoring another takedown, and getting back exposure points. He will face Christos Gikas of Greece in Round 2 "Kevin looked very calm and confident throughout the match which I am very happy to see," said Momir Petkovic, member of the U.S. world team coaching staff. "I am very happy with his performance so far." Two members of the U.S. team competing in their first World Championships are Keith Sieracki (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army) at 76 kg and Jason Loukides (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army) at 97 kg. Sieracki barely broke a sweat in his first match with a 13-0 technical fall win over Mal Suraj of India. He got on a roll of throws and it was over in 1:19. Loukides lost a 6-0 decision to Petru Sudureak of Romania. He will face Urs Burgler of Switzerland in Round 2. Burgler finished in the top ten at the 2000 Olympic Games. Everyone has waited a long time for this to come. Some of the wrestlers have family and friends who have traveled here to watch. Of course everyone wishes we could have hosted the tournament in New York City so more family and friends could attend, but it is nice that some were able to travel here and witness the tournament in person. The security is so tight in the arena that they will not even let photographers on the floor to shoot. They have to shoot from the first row of stands. 2001 Greco-Roman World Championships Patras, Greece, Dimitrios Tofalos Arena Round One 54 kg Brandon Paulson, Golden Valley, Minn.
