2001 U.S. Greco-Roman Winter Tour to include the Haparanda Cup in Sweden and the Vaanta Cup in Finland the first week of December The U.S. will send two teams to compete on a Greco-Roman Winter Tour the first week of December. The first competition will be the Haparanda Cup in Haparanda, Sweden Dec. 1-2, followed by the Vaanta Cup in Vaanta, Finland Dec. 8-9. The two teams will consist of athletes competing for their individual clubs and those competing for the U.S. Marine Corps team. Among the U.S. athletes are Nathan Piasecki (Marquette, Mich./USOEC) at 119 pounds, Cam Jones (Sandy, Utah/TAC) at 127.75 pounds, Jacob Hey (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Air Force) at 138.75 pounds, Steve Woods (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Air Force) at 152 pounds and Justin Millard (Marquette, Mich./USOEC) at 187.25 pounds. Both Piasecki and Millard attend Northern Michigan Univ. as part of the U.S. Olympic Educational Center Program. Piasecki finished third at the 2001 Sunkist Kids International Open. Jones finished third in the 2001 U.S. Nationals and fourth in the 2001 World Team Trials behind Olympians Dennis Hall and Jim Gruenwald. Hey and Woods compete for the U.S. Air Force out of Colorado Springs, Colo. Hey was fifth in the 2001 World Team Trials and finished fourth in the 1999 Haparanda Cup. Woods was second in the 2001 U.S. Nationals and finished sixth in the 1999 Haparanda Cup. The team will be coaches by Rich Estrella of Colorado Springs, Colo. Kenny Owens (Stafford, Va./U.S. Marine Corps) and Jake Clark (Woodbridge, Va./U.S. Marine Corps) of the Marine Corps team both won medals at the 2000 Haparanda Cup and will return to try to win gold medals. Owens won the silver medal at 187.25 pounds while Clark finished with the bronze medal at the same weight. Owens was eighth at the 2001 U.S. Nationals and finished fourth in the 1999 Vaanta Cup while Clark was fourth in the 2001 World Team Trials. Others competing for the Marine Corps include Jeff Hargrave (Quantico, Va./U.S. Marine Corps) at 152 pounds, Keith Barkers (Quantico, Va./U.S. Marine Corps) at 167.5 pounds, Deon Hicks (Quantico, Va./U.S. Marine Corps) at 213.75 pounds and Tipton Peterson (Stafford, Va./U.S. Marine Corps) at 213.75 pounds.
