Toccara Montgomery (Cleveland, Ohio/Sunkist Kids) has qualified for the gold-medal finals at 68 kg/149.75 lbs. at the World Freestyle Wrestling Championships in Sofia, Bulgaria. Montgomery, who is competing in her first World Championships, will face five-time World Champion Christine Nordhagen-Vierling in the gold-medal finals on Saturday night. Montgomery qualified for the finals after beating Sveta Yaroshevitch of Russia in the semifinals by pin. It was her fourth straight pin in the tournament. The finals will be a rematch of a bout at the 2001 Sunkist Kids International Open in Phoenix in October, which Montgomery won by pin over Nordhagen-Vierling. Montgomery is a freshman at Cumberland College, and was a Junior World silver medalist a year ago. Joe Williams (Iowa City, Iowa/Sunkist Kids) has qualified for the bronze medal match at 76 kg/163 lbs. this evening. He will battle Radion Kertanti of Romania for third place. Williams won his quarterfinal match on Saturday morning, beating Hajizadeh Joy Mehdi of Iran, 3-0. In the semifinals, he lost a heartbreaking match to 1996 Olympic champion and three-time World Champion Bouvaisa Saitiev of Russia, 5-4. Williams is a former star at the Univ. of Iowa and placed fourth in the 1999 World Championships. Falling just short of the medal round was Bill Zadick (Iowa City, Iowa/Hawkeye WC) at 63 kg/138.75 lbs. After winning his pool competition, Zadick was defeated by 1999 World Champion and 2000 Olympic champion Ali Reza Dabir of Iran, 9-2. Zadick, a former star at the Univ. of Iowa, is competing in his first World Championships. Montgomery, Williams and Zadick were the only Americans from the first group of athletes who advanced to Saturday's action. The second half of the field began its second day of competition on Saturday, with men's weight classes 58 kg, 69 kg, 85 kg and 130 kg and women's weight classes 51 kg, 62 kg and 75 kg starting to compete. The U.S. won all three Group Two men's matches in the morning. At 58 kg/127.75 pounds, Eric Guerrero (Stillwater, Okla./Sunkist Kids) scored an 11-0 technical fall over Aly Abou Taled of Egypt. At 69 kg/152 lbs., Chris Bono (Gilbert, Iowa/Sunkist Kids) scored an 11-0 technical fall over Carlos Dominguez of Spain. At 130 kg/286 lbs., Kerry McCoy (Bethlehem, Pa./New York AC) pinned Uselchbayar Gulegiants of Mongolia. Brandon Eggum (Minneapolis, Minn./Minnesota Storm) had a bye at 85 kg/187.25 lbs. McCoy and Eggum went 2-0 in their pool and advance to the next round. Guerrero and Bono finished 1-1 in their pool and did not advance. 1996 Olympic silver medalist Giuvi Sissauori of Canada, who beat Guerrero on Friday, has moved out of the pool. 2001 European Champion Ahmet Gulhan of Turkey, who beat Bono on Friday, claimed their pool and moved forward. The U.S. went 2-1 in Group Two women's matches in the morning. Stephanie Murata (E. Lansing, Mich./Sunkist Kids) scored a 9-3 win over S. Poubouridou of Greece at 51 kg/112.25 pounds. Murata went 2-0 in her pool and advanced. Jenna Pavlik (Lewes, Del.) went 1-1 for the morning. She dropped a 5-0 decision to Edyta Witkowska of Poland in her first match, then rebounded for a pin over Yasmili Damos of Venezuela.
