Former Minnesota wrestler Gordy Morgan named State Freestyle Coach

Former University of Minnesota wrestler and 1996 Olympian Gordy Morgan has been named the Minnesota State Freestyle Coach. Morgan will coach state wrestlers in spring and summer freestyle tournaments, including many current Golden Gophers who wrestle for the Minnesota Storm wrestling club.     Morgan is the current coach of the U.S. Olympic Education Center (USOEC) Greco-Roman wrestling team, located on the campus of Northern Michigan University. He will also coach former Golden Gophers Tim Hartung and Brandon Eggum in spring and summer senior level tournaments.    The 1989 Big Ten Champion and NCAA All-American at 158 pounds, Gordy is the older brother of current Minnesota Head Assistant Wrestling Coach Marty Morgan. Gordy finished in ninth place as a member of the 1996 U.S.Greco-Roman Olympic team in Atlanta, Ga.    In only its second year of existence, the USEOC Greco-Roman team capturedthe 2001 University Championships team title in March as 12 of its wrestlersearned All-American honors. The USOEC is one of America's four Olympiccenters but it is the only one that combines education with elite training. USOEC resident athletes are able to work toward a high school diploma or college degree while training at the Center. The Greco-Roman wrestling program was established there in the fall of 1999.
