First group of U.S. wrestlers weighs-in, prepares for pool competition at 2001 World Championships i

SOFIA, BULGARIA - The first group of men and women wrestlers have completed weigh-ins and medical checks for the 2001 World Championships in Sofia, Bulgaria. Upon weighing in each wrestler drew a number to determine their position in the pools. Head men's freestyle coach Zeke Jones said "I think we have good draws. I feel real confident that we are in a great position to do well. We just have to get out there and do the job." "We're excited about the opportunity to wrestle," said National Freestyle Coach Kevin Jackson. "As far as the pools go, we're not really concerned with who is in our pool. We just need to wrestle and wrestle well. We're ready to do what we came here to do." Half of the men's and women's weight classes will begin competition tomorrow. At 54kg Stephan Abas will see competitors from Belarus and India in his pool. Abas faces Herman Kontoyev of Belarus, who placed fourth at the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games, as well as Kripa Shankar Patel of India, who placed fourth at the 2001 Asian Championships. "I think I'll surprise a lot of people because they've never seen me at the international level," said Abas. At 63kg. World Championship newcomer Bill Zadick is set to face Youssef Nasiri-Sadiqiu of the Netherlands and Arshak Hayrapetyan of Armenia , a 2000 Olympian and top six finisher at the 2001 European Championships. Joe Williams, determined to improve on his fourth place finish at the 1999 World Championships, will face Canadian Nick Ugolaha and Salvatore Rinella from Italy at 76kg. Other notable athletes weighing in at 76kg. include Bouvaisa Satiev, brother of Adam Satiev who beat Williams in the 1999 World Championships, as well as Alexander Leipold of Germany, 2000 Olympic champion who was stripped of his gold medal after failing his post-Olympic drug test. Leipold was banned from competition for one year, and was not scheduled to wrestle in the World Championships in New York. However, his one-year ban has since expired making him eligible to wrestle in Bulgaria. Dominic Black is set to face tough competition from Vadim Tasoev from Ukraine and GankHuyag Ganzorig of Mongolia in the 97kg pool. Tasoev placed in the top 10 at the 2000 Sydney Olympic games, while Ganzorig recently captured the silver medal at the 2001 Asian Championships. In women's competition, four-time World Champion Tricia Saunders will face Misato Shimizu of Japan and Ayse Guneri of Turkey in her 46kg. pool. Shimizu, considered to be on the top wrestlers at 46kg., placed eighth at the 2000 World Championships, while Guneri is a relative newcomer to the field. Both Erin Tomeo and Tocarra Montgomery fall into pools of four, making the road out of the pool a little longer. At 56kg. Tomeo will see tough competition in two-time World Champion Seiko Yamamoto of Japan, as well as 2001 Asian Championship gold medallist Sun Dongmei of China and Tsibana Kouk of Greece. Newcomer Tocarra Montgomery will face Heidi Martti of Finland, Monika Kowalska of Poland, and China's Yang Yanli Competition for the first four men's and three women's weight classes will begin on Thursday, Nov. 22 at 10:30 a.m. in Bulgaria (3 a.m. U.S. Central Time). The remaining men's and women's weight classes will weigh-in Thursday, with competition beginning on Friday.
