Team Canada Arrives In Bulgaria For World Championships

Sofia, Bulgaria - Team Canada arrived in Sofia, Bulgaria today with high expectations for the upcoming Senior World Wrestling Championships. The 2001 event marks the first time that the men and women have competed together at the top level of competition. This will be the 35th World Freestyle Championships for the men and the 14th World Championships for the women. The event was originally scheduled for New York City in late September but was postponed due to the terrorist attacks of September 11th and ultimately moved to Bulgaria by FILA, the international governing body for the sport. Team Canada is led, on the men's side, by Olympic and World Champion, Daniel Igali of Surrey, B.C. (Burnaby Mountain W.C.) at 69 kilograms and three time World Medallist and Olympic Silver Medallist, Guivi Sissaouri of Montreal, Quebec (Montreal W.C.) at 58 kilograms. Daniel Igali is looking to shine again on the world stage for the third year in a row. The two time Canadian Male Athlete of the Year was feeling very positive about his prospects going to Bulgaria. Igali commented, "I am feeling great and ready to compete" as he entered the Bulgarian National Training Centre for a light training session this morning. Other team members are Mischa Japaridze at 54 kilograms (Montreal W.C., Montreal, PQ), Nasir Lal at 63 kilograms (Burnaby Mountain W.C., Burnaby, B.C.) and Nick Ugoalah at 76 kilograms (Burnaby Mountain W.C., Burnaby, B.C.). On the women's side, five time World Champion Christine Nordhagen-Vierling (Calgary, Alberta) has moved back down to her normal weight class of 68 kilograms were she won four of her World Championship titles. Nordhagen commented that "Sofia is a special, almost magical place for me, as I have won four of my five World Championships in Bulgaria". Other team members are 2000 World Bronze Medallist, Carol Huynh at 46 kilograms (Burnaby Mountain W.C., Hazelton, B.C.), Lyndsay Belisle at 51 kilograms (Burnaby Mountain W.C., New Hazelton, B.C.), two time World Medallist, Erica Sharp (U of Calgary Wrestling Club, Whitehorse, Yukon) at 56 kilograms, Trish Leibel (Thunderwolves W.C., Thunder Bay, ON) at 62 kilograms and newcomer Ohenewa Akuffo at 75 kilograms (Guelph W.C., Brampton, ON). The competition begins on Thursday for Nordhagen-Vierling and the women's 46, 56 and 68 kilogram categories. In addition the men's 54, 63, 76 and 97 kilogram categories also start competition. The remaining weight categories, including both Sissaouri and Igali, will begin competition on Friday. Medal matches are slated for both Saturday and Sunday evening. The team returns to Canada on Monday, November 26th.
