Hofstra's lineup will have its share of new faces this year. The team lost four national qualifiers, including two All-Americans, from last year's conference championship team. But Hofstra still has enough talent to make a strong run at the CAA championship this year. The CAA is now a 12-team conference after it merged with the ECWA. Hofstra still has four NCAA qualifiers in its lineup - Tom Noto (125 pounds), Jason DeBruin (149), Noel Thompson (165) and transfer John Garriques (174). Thompson is ranked seventh in the nation and Noto is 15th. Hofstra's 22nd-place finish at the NCAA tournament fell short of expectations last year. "At the NCAAs, we didnt get the performances we hoped for," Hofstra coach Tom Ryan said. "We have experience and this team may be the most talented we've had. We are just unproven at some weights." The CAA's best bet for an individual national champion may be Boston College heavyweight Antonio Garay, who also is considered a top NFL prospect. Garay was an All-American two years ago before falling short of the top eight at last year's national meet. Garay starts this season ranked eighth. Boston College will drop its program after this season. Rider is expected to challenge Hofstra for the CAA championship. Rider is led by returning national qualifiers Jerold Limongelli (125) and Nick Catone (174). Rider's Derek Jenkins (157), a 2000 national qualifier, also is back after sitting out last season. Jenkins is ranked 16th. George Mason, the CAA champion last year, brings back four national qualifiers to compete in the reconfigured league this year. Matt Hunckler (133), Adrian Austin (149), Sean Early (157) and Tony Howard (165) all have national tournament experience. Old Dominion also looks strong with the return of NCAA qualifiers Jeff Rusak (174) and Dennis Whitby (149). Rusak is ranked 13th. James Madison's best hope may be 165-pounder Seth Cameron, who is ranked 15th. Fellow national qualifiers Jonathan Huesdash (133), Patrick Diaz (141) and Dave Colabella (184) also are looking for breakthrough seasons. Drexel sophomore Chris Jones is the top performer for another team with hopes of winning the league title. Jones won the ECWA title at 197 last year and competed at the NCAA Tournament. Boston University returns five starters and is led by Jose Leon, a returning national qualfier at 125. Campbell, coming off a third-place finish in the CAA, hope the Bricker brothers can lead it to a successful season. Andy Bricker is at 125, Joey is at 133 and Adam at 141. Binghamton enters its second year of Division I competition this year. Packy Burke (141) and Joe Privitere (149) are among the most promising wrestlers for the Bearcats. Sacred Heart's Jason Cucolo (133) was the team's only placewinner in the ECWA last year. Cucolo will look to improve on last year's fourth-place finish. There is nowhere to go but up for Wagner after it failed to score a point in last year's ECWA meet. Terry Madden (165), a transfer from Seton Hall, should contend for a berth at nationals.
