Appalachian State rolled to the Southern Conference championship last season. With the return of four conference champions and three league runner-ups, the Mountaineers are the favorite to take home the team trophy again this year. Appalachian State will rely mainly on its fabulous four that includes returning NCAA qualifiers/conference champions in Rich Caisse (125), Travis Drake (133), P.J. Boccia (157) and Mark Fee (165). The Mountaineers also welcome back league runner-ups Sean McIntosh (184), Geoff McIntosh (197) and Danny Misenheimer (heavyweight). Winning the conference championship is no guarantee for Appalachian State, especially with Virginia Military Institute expected to challenge for the title. VMI returns NCAA qualifier and conference champ Adam Britt (157) from last season along with junior Matt Erwin (174), who redshirted last season. Britt moves up a weight class after competing at 149 a year ago while Erwin is considered one of the best wrestlers in the conference and an All-American candidate. Britt's move creates an opening at 149 for VMI freshman Mike Parsons, a prep All-American. The Keydets also will rely on Mark DiSalvo (141), a highly-regarded transfer from Central Michigan, and senior Oliver Ruiz (133), a two-time conference runner-up. The Citadel is looking to improve on last year's fourth-place league finish. The team is led by returning NCAA qualifiers Mike Regner (174) and Robby Bell (157). Regner was a conference champion and Bell a league runner-up. Sophomore Jordan Everett (197), a high school All-American, is another promising wrestler for the Bulldogs. Citadel freshman Wayne Watts (149) may be another wrestler to watch. Tennessee-Chattanooga will be led by Jared Sullivan (141) and Quantel Langford (174), who both finished second in the conference last season. Sullivan is a returning NCAA qualifier. North Carolina-Greensboro, fifth in the league last year, returns the conference's top heavyweight in 2001 league champion John Kimble. Davidson may have a tough time improving on last season's sixth-place finish in the Southern Conference. New coach T.J. Jaworsky inherits a team that returns fourth-place league placewinners in Jeff Libersat (184) and Shawn Reynolds (heavyweight).
